2014 Land Rover Range Rover: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 121 owner complaints on file for the 2014 Range Rover and lists 13 recalls[1][2]. In the complaints we read, owners describe door latch, gear shifting and engine power problems[3][4][5].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 121 owner complaints for the 2014 Range Rover[1]. Three mention a crash and 6 mention injuries[1]. None mention a fire or a death[1]. These are unverified reports from owners.
The complaints are spread over several parts of the car:
| Component group | Complaints | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Engine[5] | 32 | 56,000 |
| Electrical system[7] | 24 | 24,000 |
| Power train[4] | 21 | 50,000 |
| Structure[3] | 18 | 40,000 |
| Unknown or other[8] | 17 | 46,518 |
| Suspension[9] | 14 | Not given |
| Air bags[10] | 10 | Not given |
| Fuel/propulsion system[11] | 9 | Not given |
One complaint can name more than one group, and the counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold. We read a sample of 12 complaint texts for each of the four biggest groups[5][7][4][3]. Some of them come from owners of the Range Rover Sport or the Range Rover Evoque, so a theme may not apply to every version. Here is what owners describe in that sample:
- Engine. Owners describe a sudden loss of power or the car shutting down while driving[5]. Others describe engine part failures, such as a turbo, a timing chain or a seized engine[5].
- Power train. Owners describe gearbox fault warnings, the car dropping into neutral or changing gear by itself, and a loss of drive[4]. A smaller group describe hard or jarring shifts, sometimes after a transmission software update[4].
- Electrical system. Owners describe shifter and gearbox faults tied to the electronics, including a stuck shifter and stalling[7]. A few describe doors that opened while driving, or an auto-close door that trapped a hand[7].
- Structure. Owners describe a door that came open or would not latch while the car was moving. Some say this happened after the door latch recall repair[3].
Door complaints in these samples are on the same topic as the door latch recalls below[3][12].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 13 recalls for the 2014 Range Rover[2]. They are below, newest first. Some cover the Range Rover Sport or the Evoque as well, or only those models, so check which one matches your car. Each notice describes a free remedy from a dealer.
- Front suspension knuckle (25V514). Aug 2025. The upper knuckle joint in the front suspension may crack and let a suspension arm detach. That can cause a loss of handling and control and raise the risk of a crash. Dealers inspect the knuckles, then add a bracket to hold the joint or swap the knuckle where needed. Owner letters were mailed May 11, 2026[13]. This recall expands and replaces 24V840[13].
- Front suspension knuckle (24V840). Nov 2024. The same cracking knuckle problem, covering certain 2014-2016 Range Rover vehicles. It has been superseded by 25V514[14].
- Door latch, repeat repair (20V387). Jul 2020. Vehicles fixed under 19V392 may not have been repaired properly. The doors may look closed but be unlatched, and could open in motion. Dealers inspect the keyless latch system, disable it if needed and update the software[15].
- Door latch (19V392). May 2019. The keyless latching system may leave doors looking closed but unlatched. An unlatched door may open while the car is moving. These vehicles had already been recalled under 15V385 and needed to be fixed again. Dealers inspect the system, disable it if needed and update the software[12].
- Transmission to neutral, Evoque (16V614). Aug 2016. In 2014-2015 Evoques, a wiring harness in the transmission sensor may be poorly crimped. The transmission may then shift to neutral without warning, which raises crash risk. Dealers check the transmission serial number and update the software if needed[16].
- Air bag lamp handbook (15V571). Sep 2015. In certain 2014 Range Rover Sport vehicles, the owner's handbook may wrongly describe the air bag status lamp. Owners get a handbook supplement[17].
- Door latch (15V385). Jun 2015. Doors may unlatch unexpectedly after being closed. An occupant not wearing a seatbelt could fall out. Dealers update the keyless entry software[18].
- Passenger air bag (15V093). Feb 2015. A light adult in the front passenger seat may be misread by the occupant classification system, which can switch the passenger air bag off. Dealers update the software[19].
- Brake vacuum hose (15V042). Jan 2015. A hose may be routed wrongly and wear a hole. That can cost you braking assistance and lengthen your stopping distance. Dealers inspect and reroute the hose, and replace it if it is damaged[20].
- Tire pressure monitor (14V618). Oct 2014. The system may fail to learn where its sensors are. The low tire warning light then comes on even when pressures are fine, and could hide a real low tire. Dealers update the body control module software[21].
- Turn signal warning (14V163). Mar 2014. The turn signal may not flash or click at the faster rate that tells the driver a front signal has failed. Dealers update the software[22].
- Rear suspension bolts, Evoque (14V155). Mar 2014. Bolts holding the right rear suspension link arm may have been damaged in production, and could fail. That can cause a loss of control. This covers only 2 Evoques[23]. Dealers replace the bolts[23].
- Side air bag connector (13V607). Dec 2013. A connector in the driver and front passenger seats may come apart, so a side air bag might not work in a crash., so a side air bag might not work in a crash. Dealers modify the area around the connector[24].
Fuel economy
EPA lists several versions under the Range Rover name. The versions in this table call for premium fuel and four-wheel drive[25][26][6].
| Engine | Model | City / Highway / Combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.0L 6-cyl[25] | Range Rover | 17 / 23 / 19 | $4,350 |
| 3.0L 6-cyl[27] | Range Rover Sport | 17 / 23 / 19 | $4,350 |
| 5.0L 8-cyl[26] | Range Rover | 13 / 19 / 15 | $5,500 |
| 5.0L 8-cyl[28] | Range Rover Sport | 14 / 19 / 16 | $5,150 |
| 2.0L 4-cyl turbo[6] | Range Rover Evoque | 21 / 29 / 24 | $3,400 |
EPA also lists flex-fuel versions that run on premium or E85. They show 19 combined MPG with the 3.0L engine[29] and 16 combined with the 5.0L engine[30]. The fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Engine and size
The EPA test car list shows these horsepower ratings for 2014 Land Rover Range Rover entries: 240 hp for a 2.0L 4-cylinder[31], 306 hp for a 3.0L entry[32] and 510 hp for a 5.0L entry[33]. The list labels the last two as "electric motor", so treat them as listed ratings only.
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications from Transport Canada, and can differ slightly from US models.

NHTSA data for every Range Rover model year shows 121 complaints and 13 recalls for 2014[2]. Six model years have more complaints: 2003 (128), 2015 (190), 2016 (203), 2017 (172), 2018 (133) and 2020 (143)[2]. Four have more recalls: 2016 (14), 2020 (23), 2022 (17) and 2023 (16)[2].
Next to its neighbors, 2014 is above 2013, which has 105 complaints and 8 recalls[2]. Compared with its neighbors, 2014 has more complaints and more recalls than 2013 (105 complaints, 8 recalls). It has fewer complaints than 2015 (190) but more recalls (13 against 11). It has fewer of both than 2016 (203 complaints, 14 recalls)[2]. Counts are not adjusted for sales, so read these as a rough guide.
Should you buy a used 2014 Range Rover?
Trim to 3 to 5 sentences, for example by merging the two paragraphs and dropping the fuel cost sentence. Each recall notice describes a free dealer remedy, and the suspension knuckle recall is the newest, with owner letters mailed in May 2026[13]. Door latches have been recalled three times, and owners in the complaint sample describe doors opening even after the repair[12][15][18][3]. Gear shifting and sudden loss of drive also come up in the sample[4][7].
If you are considering one, ask for proof that every recall that applies to that exact version was completed, and ask whether the door latch work was done again. Fuel costs vary a lot by engine, from $3,400 a year to $5,500 a year in EPA's estimates[6][26]. This page cannot tell you about repair costs, tires or towing, so a pre-purchase inspection by a Land Rover specialist is a sensible step.
