2010 Mercury Milan: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2010 Milan has 1,062 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, more than any other Milan year[1][2]. It also has 11 recalls, so check which ones apply before you buy or keep one[2].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 1,062 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Of those, 40 mention a crash, 2 a fire and 22 injuries, and 0 deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several components. The counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold.
Here are the biggest component groups.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Steering[4] | 264 |
| Speed control[5] | 180 |
| Engine[6] | 175 |
| Power train[7] | 157 |
| Exterior lighting[8] | 140 |
| Air bags[9] | 115 |
| Brakes[10] | 115 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[11] | 115 |
Steering. It has the most complaints, 15 crashes and 13 injuries. The median mileage at failure is 95,000[4]. In a sample of steering complaints we read, owners describe a power steering warning followed by heavy steering or lost power assist[4].
Speed control. Median mileage at failure is 51,000, with 6 crashes and 3 injuries[5]. In the sample we read, owners describe the car failing to respond to the gas pedal while driving, often with a warning light. In the sample, several owners say turning the car off and on brought it back. A few describe the car speeding up or the pedal sticking. Some name the throttle body as the repaired part[5].
Engine. Median mileage at failure is 51,000[6]. There are 0 crashes, 0 injuries and 1 fire[6]. Owners in the sample describe stalling or sudden power loss while driving[6].
Power train. Median mileage at failure is 49,053[7]. Owners in the sample describe rough or delayed shifting, and some describe a sudden power loss with a dash warning light[7].
The sample is small and some texts repeat, so it shows what kinds of trouble owners report, not how common each one is.
Recalls
NHTSA shows 11 recalls for this model year[2]. Each covers certain vehicles, based on build dates, regions or equipment. Ford customer service for these recalls is 1-866-436-7332[12].
- Driver air bag inflator (21V158). March 2021. The driver inflator may explode as the propellant ages in heat and humidity. Metal fragments could cause serious injury or death. Dealers replace the inflator or module free[12].
- Replacement air bag inflator (21V081). February 2021. A driver or passenger inflator used as a replacement part may explode in the same way. Dealers inspect the module and replace the module or inflator if needed, free[13].
- ABS valves (19V904). December 2019. The ABS valves may react with certain brake fluid additives and not close properly. That can mean extra brake pedal travel and a higher crash risk. The fix is a brake system flush with DOT 4 fluid and a new reservoir cap[14]. The control unit is tested and replaced if needed[14].
- Passenger air bag inflator (19V001). January 2019. Same explosion risk. Owners are advised not to drive until the repair is done. Dealers replace the inflator free[15].
- Passenger air bag bracket (18V775). November 2018. After an earlier replacement, a bracket may deform and let the gas leak out. The air bag may not inflate as intended. Dealers replace the module free[16].
- Passenger air bag inflator (18V046). January 2018. Same explosion risk. Owners are advised not to drive until the repair is done. Dealers replace the inflator free[17].
- Remedy pending
Passenger air bag inflator (16V384). May 2016. The inflator may rupture and send metal fragments at occupants. Owners are advised not to drive until the repair is done. Ford's July 2016 letters said parts were not yet available, and our facts do not say when they arrived[18]. - Fuel vapor purge valve (15V793). November 2015. The valve may not work properly, which can crack the fuel tank and leak fuel. A leak near an ignition source raises fire risk. Dealers update software, test the valve, check the tank and replace parts as needed, free[19].
- Wheel studs (11V574). December 2011. On cars with 17 inch steel wheels built in certain periods, the studs may break, and a wheel could separate[20]. Dealers inspect the rear brake discs, replace them as needed and replace the lug nuts on all four wheels. The recall was expected to begin in January 2012[20].
- Park rod pin (10V222). May 2010. A pin may not have been installed properly, so a parked car without the parking brake could move on its own. Dealers repair it free[21].
- Front seat recliners (10V161). April 2010. The recliner gear teeth may be out of specification. In a crash the seatback and head restraint could move rearward, raising injury risk. Dealers replace the manual recliners free[22].
Fuel economy
EPA ratings depend on the engine and drivetrain. Annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices when the car was new.
| Version | City / Hwy / Combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| Milan Hybrid FWD, 2.5L, Automatic (variable gear ratios)[3] | 41 / 36 / 39 | $1,700 |
| Milan S, 2.5L, Automatic 6-spd[23] | 23 / 34 / 27 | $2,500 |
| Milan S, 2.5L, Manual 6-spd[24] | 22 / 31 / 25 | $2,700 |
| Milan, 2.5L, Automatic 6-spd[25] | 22 / 31 / 25 | $2,700 |
| Milan, 2.5L, Manual 6-spd[26] | 22 / 29 / 24 | $2,800 |
| Milan FFV, 3.0L, Automatic 6-spd, FWD[27] | 19 / 27 / 22 | $3,050 |
| Milan AWD FFV, 3.0L, Automatic (S6)[28] | 18 / 25 / 21 | $3,200 |
Safety ratings
NHTSA's 5-Star Safety Ratings for the 4 door FWD/AWD Milan give a rollover rating of 5 stars, with a rollover risk of 9.2%[29]. Our facts include no other star ratings.
How 2010 compares with other years

NHTSA's counts for each Milan year, from the same data:
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2006 | 214 | 4 |
| 2007 | 434 | 4 |
| 2008 | 451 | 4 |
| 2009 | 226 | 6 |
| 2010 | 1,062 | 11 |
| 2011 | 191 | 7 |
All counts are from[2]. 2010 has the most complaints and the most recalls of the six years. Complaints are not adjusted for sales, but these are all the same model.
Should you buy a used 2010 Milan?
The record is heavier than for other Milan years, with 1,062 complaints and 11 recalls[2]. Owners in our sample describe sudden power loss and lost power steering, which matter at highway speed[5][4]. If you are considering one, find out which recalls were completed, especially the air bag inflator recalls, three of which advise against driving until repair[15][17][18]. Merge or cut one sentence, for example: "Ask for repair records on the throttle, steering and transmission. Fuel economy varies by engine, from 21 to 39 combined MPG[28][3], and our facts cannot say how any single car has held up." Then also join the first two sentences or drop one to reach 5 or fewer in total.
