2016 Mitsubishi Outlander: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Owners filed 171 complaints with NHTSA for the 2016 Outlander, and the most reported group is the power train[1][2]. NHTSA lists 11 recalls for the model year, so check your VIN[3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 171 owner complaints on file for the 2016 Outlander[1]. Nine mention a crash, one a fire and seven an injury. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several parts. The counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold.
The component groups named most often:
- Power train: 71 complaints, median mileage at failure 78,000[2].
- Engine: 29 complaints, median mileage 48,700[6].
- Brakes: 25 complaints, median mileage 41,892[7].
- Unknown or other: 19 complaints[8].
- Electrical system: 17 complaints, median mileage 13,500[9].
- Structure: 14 complaints[10].
- Speed control: 14 complaints[11].
- Exterior lighting: 13 complaints[12].
What owners describe. We read a small sample of the complaint texts. A few come from Outlander Sport owners, since NHTSA files both names under this model year.
In a sample of power train complaints we read, owners describe hesitation or a delay when accelerating, and an engine that keeps revving instead of shifting. Two describe a transmission replacement[2]. One owner says the hesitation came back after the software update from recall 16V563[13].
In a sample of brake complaints, owners describe a parking brake or rear caliper that stuck or would not hold. Others describe a pedal that did not stop the car, or shaking when braking[7]. Of these groups, brakes lists the most crashes, 3, along with 2 injuries[7].
In the engine sample, owners describe stalling, lost power and hesitation[6]. The electrical sample is similar, with stalling, one case tied to a relay, plus door locks and USB ports that stopped working[9]. The engine group lists 2 crashes and 1 fire[6]. The electrical group lists 2 crashes, 1 fire and 2 injuries[9].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 11 recalls for this model year in our data[3]. Some name only the Outlander Sport, or other years, so check your VIN on NHTSA.gov before you count on one. Newest first:
- Liftgate gas springs (26V252). April 2026. The springs can corrode and lose pressure, so the liftgate can fall or a spring can rupture. Risk of injury. The fix is new left and right gas springs, free. It names 2014 to 2020 Outlander vehicles and expands recall 25V507[14].
- Liftgate gas springs (25V507). August 2025. The same defect, for vehicles sold or registered in certain states. The fix is new gas springs, free[15].
- Parking brake (20V741). November 2020. A rust coating may have peeled off the rear brake shafts. Water can make them corrode and bind, so the parking brake may not hold and the car could roll away. The fix is new rear brake caliper assemblies, free. It names 2016 Outlander and Outlander Sport[16].
- Seat belt buckle (20V403). July 2020. The center rear buckle can knock the right-side buckle cover off when the seat backs are folded. The buckle then cannot latch, which raises injury risk in a crash. Dealers modify the buckle cover and add warning labels, free[17].
- Front cross member (20V279). May 2020. Road salt can corrode the cross member, so a front control arm can detach and the driver can lose control. It names 2008 to 2013 Outlander and 2011 to 2016 Outlander Sport in certain states. Dealers inspect the part, then treat it or replace it, free[18].
- Wiper link (18V103). February 2018. Water can corrode the wiper link ball joint, and the wipers can stop working. It names 2011 to 2016 Outlander Sport. The fix is a new wiper link rod and motor crank arm, free[19].
- Parking brake (18V070). January 2018. Water can corrode the actuator shafts in the rear calipers, so the parking brake may not engage or release. The car could move on a slope. Dealers inspect and replace parts as needed, free. It names 2014 to 2016 Outlander and 2013 to 2016 Outlander Sport[20].
- Starter relay (17V609). September 2017. Faulty relays can cause an engine stall, reduced power or overheating. A stall raises crash risk. The fix is new relays, free. It names 2015 to 2017 Outlander[21].
- Door latch (17V233). April 2017. Inside door latches may not hold in high heat, so a door could open while driving. The fix is new latches, free. It names 2016 Outlander and Outlander Sport[22].
- Liftgate support (16V867). December 2016. The support tube may not have enough anti-corrosion treatment, so the liftgate can drop suddenly. It names certain 2016 Outlander Sport vehicles built in 2016. The fix is new supports, free[23].
- Transmission software (16V563). July 2016. The CVT can delay acceleration, which raises crash risk. Dealers reprogram the CVT control unit, free. It names 2016 Outlander and 2015 to 2016 Outlander Sport[13].
Fuel economy

Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, and the recall count can include recalls that cover several years. Treat this as a rough guide only.
Should you buy a used 2016 Outlander?
The 2016 model year has more complaints than most years of this model, with power train, engine and brake reports leading[1][2][6][7]. Owners in the samples we read describe hesitation and stalling, so a long test drive is worth it. Run the VIN on NHTSA.gov to see which of the 11 recalls apply and whether they were done[3]. The 5 star overall rating for the AWD version is a plus[5]. Our data cannot say how reliable the car is compared with others, and it does not cover price or towing.
