2007 Saab 9-3: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Air bags are the largest complaint group for the 2007 Saab 9-3 with 65 complaints, and a driver air bag inflator recall applies to this model year[1][2]. NHTSA has 155 owner complaints on file in all[3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 155 owner complaints on file for the 2007 Saab 9-3[3]. Two mention a crash, 5 mention a fire and 4 mention injuries[3]. None report a death[3]. These are unverified owner reports. One complaint can name several parts, so the groups below can overlap and are not meant to add up to the total. Counts are not adjusted for sales.
| Component group | Complaints | Median mileage at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Air bags[1] | 65 | 60,562 |
| Engine[6] | 24 | 73,000 |
| Suspension[7] | 24 | 69,250 |
| Brakes[8] | 13 | 27,690 |
| Electrical system[9] | 12 | 50,500 |
| Seat belts[10] | 7 | 86,992 |
Here is what owners describe in a small sample of complaint texts we read. Repeated copies of the same text were counted once.
- Air bags. Of 10 texts, 6 come from owners who were told about the driver air bag recall and said the repair part was not available when they called[1]. Two say the air bags did not deploy in a crash[1]. Two describe an air bag warning light or a module fault with a costly repair quote[1].
- Engine. Of 12 texts, 7 describe stalling, rough idle or hard starting[6]. Five describe a fire in the engine area, and some of those cars were parked when it happened[6]. The component fact also lists 5 fires and no injuries for this group[6].
- Suspension. All 11 texts describe a broken front coil spring[7]. Owners often noticed rattling or a clunk first[7].
- Brakes. Of 11 texts, 10 describe a sudden loss of braking power or a very hard pedal at or soon after startup or at low speed[8]. Several owners said they had to use the parking brake to stop[8]. Brakes have the lowest median mileage of the groups in the table, 27,690 miles[8].
The electrical group has 2 fires and 1 injury[9]. Seats have 5 complaints[11] and speed control has 4[12].
Recalls
Two recalls are on file for this model year[2][13].
- Driver air bag inflator (16V063). Filed February 3, 2016[2]. Too much pressure inside the driver's front air bag inflator can make it rupture when the bag deploys. Metal fragments could hit the driver or other people in the car and cause serious injury or death. The recall covers 2006 to 2011 Saab 9-3 cars[2]. It lists 113,716 potentially affected vehicles across the models it names[2]. Dealers replace the inflator free of charge. The recall began on March 1, 2017[2]. Some owners in the complaint sample said parts were not available when they called, so ask a dealer about stock for your car[1].
- Seat belt retractor (14V318). Filed June 12, 2014[13]. This one covers the 9-3 Convertible only[13]. The driver's front seat belt retractor may break, so the belt does not pull back in. In a crash, a belt that has not retracted may not hold the person properly, which raises the risk of injury. The recall lists 28,789 potentially affected vehicles[13]. Dealers replace the driver's retractor free of charge, and the recall began on October 6, 2015[13]. A separate program, Special Coverage 10086, replaces the passenger retractor free of charge for the life of the vehicle if it fails[13].
Fuel economy
The EPA lists combined ratings of 18 to 22 MPG across the 9-3 Convertible, Sport Sedan and SportCombi[14][15][16][17][5][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. The 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo takes premium fuel[14]. The 2.8L 6-cylinder turbo is listed with regular[16]. All are front-wheel drive[14]. Annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
| Body style and engine | Transmission | City / highway / combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |

| Sport Sedan, 2.0L turbo[5][18] | Manual 6-spd or Automatic (S5) | 19 / 28 / 22 | $3,750 |

| SportCombi, 2.8L turbo[24] | Automatic (S6) | 15 / 26 / 18 | $3,700 |
Safety ratings
NHTSA's 5-Star Safety Ratings list the 4-door front-wheel-drive model as not rated[25]. The convertible is also not rated[26]. That means there is no crash-test star score to compare for those body styles.
Engine and size
The EPA lists a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo and a 2.8L 6-cylinder turbo for this model year[14][16]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US cars. Weights and lengths are converted from metric[27].

Should you buy a used 2007 Saab 9-3?
Among Saab 9-3 model years, 2007 sits in the upper part for complaints, with 155[4]. Air bags lead the complaint list with 65[1], and the driver air bag inflator recall 16V063 applies, so confirm with a dealer that the work was done on any car you look at[2]. In the complaint sample we read, In the small sample of complaints we read, owners described broken front coil springs and sudden brake loss, so a careful test drive and a mechanic's inspection make sense[7][8].[7][8]. If you are looking at a convertible, the seat belt retractor recall 14V318 also applies[13]. This page gives facts, not a buy or avoid call, and it cannot tell you the condition of one particular car.
