2022 Tesla Model Y: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2022 Tesla Model Y has 873 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, and NHTSA has 873 owner complaints on file for the 2022 Tesla Model Y, and in the samples we read, owners describe hard braking with cruise control on[1][2].[1][2]. It also has 20 recalls, and the headlight recall has no repair yet[3][4].
Reported problems
NHTSA has 873 owner complaints on file for the 2022 Tesla Model Y[1]. They include 91 that mention a crash, 8 a fire, 152 injuries and 103 deaths[1]. These are unverified reports from owners, so treat them as signals, not proof.
One complaint can name several parts of the car, so the groups below overlap and should not be added together.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Forward collision avoidance[5] | 497 |
| Speed control[2] | 140 |
| Brakes[6] | 132 |
| Unknown or other[7] | 121 |
| Electrical system[8] | 120 |
| Lane departure[9] | 72 |
| Steering[10] | 61 |
| Suspension[11] | 38 |
Braking with cruise control on. In the sample of complaints we read for speed control, owners describe the car braking hard and suddenly while cruise control or driver assistance is on, with nothing in the way[2]. Several say it happens when a large truck passes in the opposite lane, and some worry about being hit from behind. The brakes sample describes the same thing, and some owners say they stopped using the feature[6]. In the forward collision avoidance sample, owners report hard braking on two-lane roads and over hills[5]. The sample also includes one report of a camera with moisture inside the glass[5].
Electrical complaints. The electrical system sample is mixed. Some owners describe the same sudden braking[8]. Others describe a frozen or black screen, or a loss of power or driver assistance features while driving[8].
The complaint file is large, but we only read a small sample of texts, so we cannot say how many owners are affected.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 20 recalls for the 2022 Model Y model year[3]. They are listed newest first.
- Remedy pending
Headlights (26V507). Certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles may have low beams that are too bright[4]. That can reduce visibility for oncoming drivers. This recall covers 20,349 vehicles[4]. Tesla Service will replace the headlights, but the remedy is not yet available. Owners will get another notice when the repair is ready.[4] - Rearview camera software (26V283). The rearview camera image may be delayed when the car is put in reverse, which limits the driver's view behind the car. This recall covers 218,868 vehicles[12]. The remedy is a free over-the-air software update.[12]
- Tire pressure warning (24V935). The low tire pressure warning light may not stay on between drives, so a driver may not be warned. This recall covers 696,281 vehicles[13]. The remedy is a free over-the-air software update.[13]
- Hood latch (24V554). The hood latch may fail to detect a hood that was left unlatched. An unlatched hood can open fully and block the driver's view. This recall covers 1,849,638 vehicles[14]. The remedy is a free over-the-air software update.[14]
- Seat belt warning (24V376). The seat belt warning light and chime may not work as intended when the driver is unbelted. This recall covers 125,233 vehicles[15]. The fix Tesla describes is an over-the-air software update.[15]
- Pedestrian warning sounds (24V153). A factory reset muted the sounds that warn pedestrians the car is approaching. This recall covers 6,557 vehicles[16]. The remedy is a free over-the-air software update.[16]
- Brake and ABS warning lights (24V051). The warning lights for the brake, park and anti-lock brake system were shown in a font that is too small, which can make them hard to read. This recall covers 2,193,869 vehicles[17]. Tesla began releasing a free over-the-air software update.[17]
- Autosteer controls (23V838). The controls for Autosteer may not do enough to prevent a driver from misusing this driver assistance feature, which raises the risk of a crash. This recall covers 2,031,220 vehicles[18]. Tesla's stated remedy is a free over-the-air software update.[18]
- Steering wheel fastener (23V385). The fastener holding the steering wheel may be loose. The wheel could disconnect from the steering column and the driver could lose steering control. This recall covers 137 vehicles[19]. Tesla Service will inspect the fastener and replace it as necessary, free of charge.[19]
- Rear seat bolts (23V130). Bolts holding the second-row seat back frames may not be tight enough, which can reduce how well the seat belts work in a crash. This recall covers 3,470 vehicles[20]. Tesla Service Centers will check the bolts and tighten them if needed at no cost.[20]
- Full Self-Driving Beta behavior (23V085). Cars with Full Self-Driving Beta software may act unsafely around intersections, for example by going straight from a turn-only lane or entering a stop sign intersection without a full stop. This recall covers 362,758 vehicles[21]. Tesla's stated remedy is a free over-the-air software update.[21]
- Taillights (22V844). One or both taillights may fail to light up at times, which makes the car harder to see. This recall covers 321,628 vehicles[22]. The remedy is a free over-the-air software update.[22]
- Window auto-reverse (22V702). The window system that should reverse when it meets an obstruction may not react correctly, so a closing window could pinch a person. This recall covers 1,096,762 vehicles[23]. Tesla's stated remedy is a free over-the-air software update.[23]
- Screen overheating (22V296). The main computer may overheat while preparing for or doing fast charging, which can make the center screen lag or restart. The screen shows the rearview image, gear selection and warning lights. This recall covers 129,960 vehicles[24]. Tesla's stated remedy is an over-the-air update that improves temperature management.[24]
- Boombox and pedestrian sounds (22V235). The Boombox feature can play sounds outside the car while it is moving, which may cover the pedestrian warning sounds. This recall covers 594,894 vehicles[25]. Tesla's stated remedy is an over-the-air update that disables Boombox while the car is in Drive, Neutral and Reverse. The record says this recall supersedes 22V063.[25]
- Boombox and pedestrian sounds (22V063). This is the earlier recall for the same Boombox issue. It covers 578,607 vehicles[26]. The record says it was superseded by 22V235.[26]
- Heat pump defrosting (22V050). A software error may trap refrigerant in the heat pump and reduce defrosting, which can hurt the driver's view. This recall covers 26,681 vehicles[27]. Tesla's stated remedy is a free over-the-air software update.[27]
- Seat belt chime (22V045). The chime may not sound at start up when the driver has not buckled up. This recall covers 817,143 vehicles[28]. Tesla's stated remedy is a free over-the-air software update.[28]
- Rolling stop (22V037). The rolling stop function in Full Self-Driving Beta may let the car pass through an all-way stop without first stopping. This recall covers 53,822 vehicles[29]. Tesla's stated remedy is a free over-the-air update that disables the function.[29]
- Suspension knuckles (21V912). The front and rear suspension knuckles may fracture, so suspension links could separate and reduce stability and control. This recall covers 826 vehicles[30]. Tesla Service will inspect the knuckles and replace them as necessary, free of charge.[30]
The headlight record says the repair is not yet available[4]. Several other records use wording such as "will release" for the update[15][18][21], so ask Tesla whether the fix is ready for your car.

Should you buy a used 2022 Model Y?
The complaint file is large at 873 reports, and the three biggest component groups are forward collision avoidance, speed control and brakes[5][2][6]. In the samples we read, owners describe sudden hard braking with cruise control on, so test drive on a two-lane road if you can[2][6].. In the samples we read, owners describe sudden hard braking with cruise control on, so test drive on a two-lane road if you can[2][6]. Most recalls on file use over-the-air updates, but the headlight recall has no repair yet, and the steering, seat bolt and suspension recalls need an inspection at a Tesla Service Center[4][19][20][30]. Check your VIN for open recalls before you buy. The data cannot tell you how reliable one specific car will be.
