2015 Toyota Land Cruiser: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2015 Land Cruiser has very few owner complaints on file with NHTSA, just 2 in total[1]. The bigger things to check are its recalls, which cover the fuel pump and the air bags[2][3][4], and its thirst for fuel at 15 MPG combined[5].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 2 owner complaints for the 2015 Land Cruiser[1]. One mentions a crash, and none report a fire, an injury or a death[1]. That is a very small number, so it does not point to a pattern.
- Air bags. Both complaints name the air bag group, and 1 of them mentions a crash[7].
- Seat belts. One complaint names the seat belt group, with no crash, fire or injury[8].
These are not separate problems in every case. One complaint can name more than one part, and in the sample of complaints we read, the seat belt report and one of the air bag reports are the same owner[7][8]. That owner says they were waiting on the seat belt and air bag recall repair (18V887) and the dealer did not have parts yet. They had not had a failure[8].
The other air bag report describes a collision where the air bags did not open[7]. That owner names the vehicle differently and writes from outside the US, so it may not describe a US-market Land Cruiser[7].
Keep in mind that complaints are unverified owner reports and are not adjusted for how many cars were sold.
Recalls
Four recalls in our data apply to the 2015 Land Cruiser[2][3][4][9]. All repairs are free at a dealer. Before you buy, ask a Toyota dealer to confirm each recall repair was done on that vehicle.
- Fuel pump (20V012). The low-pressure fuel pump inside the tank can fail. If it does, the engine can stall while you drive, which raises the risk of a crash. Dealers replace the pump. The 2014 and 2015 Land Cruiser were added when Toyota widened this recall on March 4, 2020[2].
- Seat belt sensor and air bags (18V887). A wire harness for the seat belt tension sensor can break over time. That can switch off the front passenger air bag, the knee air bag and the passenger seat side air bag, so they would not help in a crash. Dealers adjust the passenger seat belt assembly or replace it with an improved part. The recall began February 11, 2019[3]. One owner complaint describes waiting for parts for this repair[8].
- Wrong air bag fitted (17V548). Some vehicles may have the wrong driver or front passenger air bag installed. It may not deploy the way it should in a crash. Dealers replace the affected air bags. Only 21 units were listed as potentially affected across all covered models, so few cars are involved[4].
- Dealer-installed accessories (14V828). This one only matters if Southeast Toyota Distributors installed accessories such as running boards. Their bolts may not have been tightened enough, and the part could come loose and cause a crash or injury. Dealers inspect and tighten the bolts[9].
Fuel economy
The EPA rates the 2015 Land Cruiser Wagon 4WD with the 5.7L 8-cylinder engine and Automatic (S6) at 13 MPG city, 18 MPG highway and 15 MPG combined[5]. It runs on regular fuel[5].
The EPA estimates the yearly fuel cost at $4,450[5]. That figure uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new, so your own cost depends on how much you drive and what you pay at the pump.
Safety ratings
NHTSA lists the 2015 Land Cruiser as not rated in its 5-Star Safety Ratings program[10]. That means there is no NHTSA star score to compare for this year.
Engine and size
The 2015 Land Cruiser in our data has one engine. The EPA test car list rates the 5.7L 8-cylinder at 381 hp[11]. It is paired with Automatic (S6) and 4-Wheel Drive[5].
| Engine | Horsepower |
|---|---|
| 5.7L 8-cylinder[11] | 381 hp |

Among the Land Cruiser model years NHTSA lists, 2015 is one of the quietest for complaints[6].
- Complaints. The 2015 has 2, the same as 2014[6]. Only 2019 and 2020 (0 each) and 2021 and 2027 (1 each) have fewer[6]. The 2024 (39) and 2025 (33) have the most[6].
- Recalls. The 2015 has 4, tied with 2014 and 2025[6]. The 2008 (5), 2009 (7), 2010 (6), 2011 (5) and 2024 (5) have more[6].
Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so treat these as a rough guide rather than a reliability score.
Should you buy a used 2015 Land Cruiser?
Owner complaints give little reason for worry, with just 2 on file and no reported fires, injuries or deaths[1]. The main homework is the recalls. Confirm that the fuel pump (20V012) and seat belt sensor (18V887) repairs were done, since both affect safety[2][3]. Budget for fuel, because the EPA rates it at 15 MPG combined with an estimated $4,450 a year in fuel[5]. With so few complaints, our data cannot tell you much about long-term reliability, so a pre-purchase inspection is still a good idea.
