2017 Toyota RAV4: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Owners filed 321 complaints with NHTSA about the 2017 RAV4, and the largest group of them is about the electrical system[1][2]. The car has 3 recalls on file, including a battery fit problem that carries a fire risk[3][4].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 321 owner complaints for the 2017 RAV4[1]. Of those, 34 mention a crash, 24 a fire and 30 an injury, and 2 report a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injuries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical System[2] | 111 | 4 | 15 | 4 |
| Unknown or other[7] | 64 | 8 | 6 | 7 |
| Brakes[8] | 40 | 9 | 0 | 4 |
| Engine[9] | 34 | 1 | 14 | 1 |
| Exterior lighting[10] | 32 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
| Structure[11] | 21 | 6 | 3 | 5 |
| Air bags[12] | 20 | 13 | 0 | 12 |
| Power train[13] | 16 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Electrical system. This is the biggest group. The median mileage at failure is 37,000 miles[2]. In the sample of complaints we read, owners describe the car losing power or the dash going dark, charging system warnings, driver assist features that react when they should not, and slow shifting in cold weather[2]. The sample is small and the stories are mixed, so it does not point to one single fault.
Brakes. There are 40 complaints, with a median mileage at failure of 9,775 miles[8]. In the sample we read, owners describe pressing the pedal and the car not slowing as expected, or the pedal sinking toward the floor. Some of those reports end in a crash[8]. A few describe pads and rotors wearing out early[8].
Engine. Of the 34 complaints in this group, 14 mention a fire[9]. In the sample we read, some owners describe smoke and then flames under the hood. Others describe stalling or rough idle, and brake noise filed under this group[9].
Exterior lighting. There are 32 complaints with a median mileage at failure of 6,000 miles, and only 1 mentions a fire[10]. In the sample we read, owners describe low beam headlights that light the road below a line and leave the area above it dark. They say this makes night driving feel unsafe. Some say the dealer told them the lights work as designed[10].
Air bags. There are only 20 complaints, but 13 mention a crash and 12 an injury[12].
The unknown or other group has 64 complaints, and the power train group has 16 with no crashes, fires or injuries[7][13].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 3 recalls for the 2017 RAV4[3]. They are listed here, newest first.
- Battery fit (23V734, November 2023). Some replacement 12-volt batteries may sit badly in the battery tray[4]. The battery can then move, touch the hold-down bracket and short circuit, which raises the risk of a fire[4]. It covers certain 2013 to 2018 RAV4 vehicles, with 1,853,568 units potentially affected[4]. Dealers replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray and positive terminal cover, free of charge[4]. Owner letters went out in phases, starting with 2013 and 2014 owners in December 2024, with later phases planned for May 2025 and late July 2025[4]. Toyota customer service can be reached at 1-800-331-4331[4].
- Load label (19V503, June 2019). The load carrying capacity label on certain vehicles with factory-installed floor mats may be wrong. A wrong label could lead someone to overload the vehicle, which raises the risk of a crash[14]. It covers 1,325 vehicles across several 2017 to 2019 Toyota models, including the RAV4[14]. The fix is a corrected label placed over the wrong one, free of charge[14].
- Spare tire pressure (17V295, May 2017). The spare tire on certain vehicles was not filled to the pressure on the tire pressure label, so it may not perform as intended, which raises the risk of a crash[15]. It potentially affects 409 vehicles across many 2017 Toyota models, including the RAV4[15]. Dealers check the spare tires and adjust the pressure, free of charge[15].
Fuel economy
EPA ratings differ by version. The hybrid is well ahead of the gasoline versions.
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| RAV4, front-wheel drive[16] | 23 / 29 / 25 | $2,700 |
| RAV4 LE/XLE, front-wheel drive[17] | 23 / 30 / 26 | $2,600 |
| RAV4 AWD[18] | 22 / 28 / 25 | $2,700 |
| RAV4 Limited AWD/SE AWD[19] | 22 / 28 / 24 | $2,800 |
| RAV4 Hybrid AWD[5] | 34 / 30 / 32 | $2,100 |
All of the gasoline versions use a 2.5L 4-cylinder with an Automatic (S6) and run on regular fuel[16][17][18][19]. The hybrid is listed as Automatic (AV-S6) and also runs on regular[5].
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the all-wheel-drive RAV4 an overall rating of 5 stars[6]. It scores 4 stars for frontal crash, 5 for side crash and 4 for rollover, with a rollover risk of 16.9%[6]. The front-wheel-drive version has the same star ratings and a rollover risk of 17.4%[20]. The RAV4 Hybrid AWD matches the all-wheel-drive car, with the same stars and a 16.9% rollover risk[21].
Engine and size
The EPA lists the 2017 RAV4 with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine rated from 112 to 176 hp, depending on version[22].
These dimensions are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models. Every version is listed at 181 in long, 73 in wide and 67 in tall, on a 105 in wheelbase[23][24][25]. Curb weight differs by version:

Should you buy a used 2017 RAV4?
The 2017 RAV4 has 321 complaints, and 10 other RAV4 model years have more complaints, and NHTSA rates it 5 stars overall[3][6]. The recall to look at first is 23V734, because it carries a fire risk and its owner letters were sent in phases[4]. The electrical and engine groups have the most fire mentions, 15 and 14, and the samples we read include brake and headlight complaints[2][9][8][10]. If you are comparing versions, the hybrid has the best EPA fuel economy at 32 combined MPG[5]. Complaints are unverified, so check a specific car's recall status and service history before you decide.
