2026 Volkswagen Atlas: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 11 owner complaints on file for the 2026 Atlas, a low count next to other Atlas model years[1][2]. There are also 2 recalls to check before you buy[2].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 11 owner complaints for this model year[1]. One mentions injuries. None mention a crash, a fire or a death[1]. These are unverified reports from owners, and one complaint can name more than one part.
By component group, the engine has the most complaints with 4[5]. The electrical system has 3[6]. Unknown or other has 2[7]. Fuel/propulsion, speed control, exterior lighting, back over prevention and tires have 1 each[8][9][10][11][12].
We read a small sample of the complaint texts. This is not a count of all owners, so treat it as a hint only.
- Engine. In a sample of 4 engine complaints we read, 2 describe shaking and a flashing check engine light, and one of those two also describes a loss of power[5].. One describes an oil leak near the turbo area[5]. One describes the infotainment system restarting and briefly switching off driver assistance features[5].
- Electrical. In a sample of 3 complaints we read, all 3 describe faults with the infotainment screen, the connected services module or the backup camera[6].
- Rear camera. One complaint we read says the infotainment screen keeps shutting down, and the backup camera and rear traffic alert stop working with it[11].
The engine and electrical samples overlap, because some complaints name both groups.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 2 recalls for the 2026 Atlas[2]. Newest first:
- Rearview camera software (26V473). Filed July 22, 2026, covering 57,851 vehicles, including 2024 to 2026 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models[13]. A low-voltage electrical event can affect the display screen, so the rearview camera image may not show. That can reduce what the driver sees behind the car and raise the risk of a crash. Dealers update the camera software for free. Owner letters were mailed August 4, 2026[13].
- Wheel bolts (25V835). Filed December 3, 2025, covering 27 vehicles[14]. Some 2026 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport and ID.4 vehicles may have the wrong wheel bolts from the factory[14]. A wrong bolt can let a wheel come off, which raises the risk of a crash. Owners are told not to drive the vehicle until it is repaired. Dealers inspect the bolts and replace them as needed, for free. Owner letters were mailed December 12, 2025[14].
The VINs for both recalls are searchable on NHTSA.gov[13][14]. Volkswagen's customer service number in both notices is 1-800-893-5298[13][14].
Fuel economy
EPA lists a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo with an Automatic (S8) for every version, and it takes regular fuel[3][15][16][17][18][19]. Ratings depend on the drive type and version.
| Version | City / Highway / Combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| Atlas, front-wheel drive[3] | 20 / 27 / 23 | $2,900 |
| Atlas Cross Sport, front-wheel drive[15] | 20 / 27 / 23 | $2,900 |
| Atlas SE 4motion, all-wheel drive[17] | 20 / 26 / 22 | $3,050 |
| Atlas Cross Sport 4motion, all-wheel drive[18] | 20 / 26 / 22 | $3,050 |
| Atlas SEL 4motion, all-wheel drive[16] | 19 / 25 / 21 | $3,200 |
| Atlas 4motion Peak Edition, all-wheel drive[19] | 19 / 25 / 21 | $3,200 |
The annual cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the same stars in all four entries we have. That is 5 stars overall, 4 stars frontal, 5 stars side and 4 stars rollover[4][20][21][22].
The rollover risk differs a little by version:
Engine and size
EPA lists the 2.0L 4-cylinder at 269 hp[23]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models[24].
| Version | Length | Width | Height | Wheelbase | Curb weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Atlas 4MOTION 2.0L[24] | 201 in | 78 in | 69 in | 117 in | 4,442 lb |
| Atlas 4MOTION 3.6L[25] | 201 in | 78 in | 69 in | 117 in | 4,594 lb |
| Atlas Cross Sport 4MOTION 2.0L[26] | 196 in | 78 in | 68 in | 117 in | 4,442 lb |
| Atlas Cross Sport 4MOTION 3.6L[27] | 196 in | 78 in | 68 in | 117 in | 4,594 lb |
How 2026 compares with other years
Show the numbers
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 466 | 17 |
| 2019 | 482 | 12 |
| 2020 | 134 | 11 |
| 2021 | 645 | 17 |
| 2022 | 258 | 7 |
| 2023 | 157 | 6 |
| 2024 | 275 | 8 |
| 2025 | 73 | 5 |
| 2026 | 11 | 2 |
NHTSA's totals for each Atlas model year are below. Counts are not adjusted for sales, and Keep the caveat but drop the[2] tag from that clause, or write 'Counts are not adjusted for sales, so compare with care[2].'.
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2018[2] | 466 | 17 |
| 2019[2] | 482 | 12 |
| 2020[2] | 134 | 11 |
| 2021[2] | 645 | 17 |
| 2022[2] | 258 | 7 |
| 2023[2] | 157 | 6 |
| 2024[2] | 275 | 8 |
| 2025[2] | 73 | 5 |
| 2026[2] | 11 | 2 |
| 2027[2] | 0 | 0 |
From 2018 to 2026, 2026 has the fewest complaints and the fewest recalls, apart from 2027, which has none listed. A newer model year has had less time to collect complaints, so the comparison is not fair yet[2].
Should you buy a used 2026 Atlas?
The early record is light. There are 11 complaints. One mentions injuries, and none mention a crash, a fire or a death[1]. Safety ratings are 5 stars overall[4]. The sample of complaints we read points to infotainment and electronic faults, and a few engine problems, so test those features on any car you consider[5][6]. Check the VIN for both recalls, because the camera software update and the wheel bolt inspection are both free at a dealer[13][14].
