2006 Volkswagen Beetle: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Owners of the 2006 Beetle filed 125 complaints with NHTSA, and the largest group, 46, concerns the power train[1][2]. Owners of the 2006 Beetle filed 125 complaints with NHTSA, and the largest group concerns the power train[1][2]. NHTSA also lists recalls for the car[3][4][5].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 125 complaints with NHTSA[1]. Seven mention a crash and one a fire. Nine injuries are reported. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several parts.
Here are the groups with the most complaints:
| Component group | Complaints | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Power train[2] | 46 | 69,400 |
| Engine[8] | 20 | 50,000 |
| Electrical system[9] | 14 | 68,440 |
| Air bags[10] | 10 | 58,570 |
| Visibility[11] | 9 | 32,050 |
| Exterior lighting[12] | 9 | 51,678 |
| Structure[13] | 7 | 33,500 |
| Brakes[14] | 6 | 86,000 |
Power train. We read a sample of 12 power train complaints. Owners in 7 of them describe a transmission that slips, jerks or will not shift[2]. Three describe a failed dual mass flywheel, though two of those texts are identical[2]. Three describe clutch trouble on manual cars[2]. Two of the 46 complaints mention a crash[2].
Engine. In a sample of 12 engine complaints, 4 describe the car stalling, shutting off or losing power while driving[8]. Two describe a loud howl from the A/C fan or compressor[8].
Electrical system. In a sample of 12, five describe a sudden loss of power or of electrical systems[9]. Four describe power window failures[9]. Two describe a fuse box that melted[9].
Air bags. In a sample of 9, seven describe the air bag warning light, and five of those point to a seat belt sensor or buckle[10]. Two owners say the same sensor failed again and again[10]. Two of the 10 complaints mention a crash and one an injury[10].
Recalls
NHTSA lists three recalls for this car, newest first.
- Fuel line chafing (10V621), December 10, 2010[3]. A power steering hose clamp on the New Beetle and New Beetle Convertible may sit in the wrong spot and rub against a fuel supply line. A fuel leak could form, and a leak near an ignition source could cause a fire. Dealers inspect and, if needed, replace the fuel line, and they adjust the clamp. The work is free. The notice said the recall was expected to begin on or before January 31, 2011[3]. About 228,236 vehicles of several models were potentially affected, and the notice names cars with 2.5L engines[3].
- Brake light switch (07V063), February 20, 2007[4]. A brake light switch that was installed incorrectly may fail. The brake lights could stop working or stay on, which could lead to a crash without warning. Dealers install a newly designed switch free of charge. The recall began April 27, 2007[4]. A car may fall under this recall or under 06V183, but not both. About 1,002,000 vehicles were potentially affected[4].
- Tire label (06V043), February 9, 2006[5]. Some cars with 17-inch wheels and a 2.5L engine have a tire information label that lists the wrong front tire size. The correct size is 225/45 R17[5]. The risk is that owners fit the wrong replacement tires. Owners get a new label with instructions, and a dealer can install it free of charge. 906 vehicles were potentially affected[5].
Fuel economy
The EPA lists six versions with these ratings:
| Version | City / Highway / Combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1.9L turbo diesel, Manual 5-spd[7] | 31 / 40 / 34 | $2,800 |
| 1.9L turbo diesel, Automatic (S6)[15] | 30 / 38 / 33 | $2,900 |
| 2.5L 5-cyl, Manual 5-spd[16] | 20 / 28 / 23 | $2,900 |
| 2.5L 5-cyl, Automatic (S6)[17] | 20 / 29 / 23 | $2,900 |
| Convertible, 2.5L 5-cyl, Manual 5-spd[18] | 19 / 28 / 22 | $3,050 |
| Convertible, 2.5L 5-cyl, Automatic (S6)[19] | 19 / 28 / 22 | $3,050 |
All are front-wheel drive. The diesel versions use diesel fuel and the 2.5L versions use regular[18][7]. The EPA fuel cost uses current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA has not rated the 2 DR FWD version in its 5-Star Safety Ratings[20].
Engine and size
The EPA data lists a 1.9L turbo 4-cylinder diesel and a 2.5L 5-cylinder engine that runs on regular fuel[7][16]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US cars.

The 2006 Beetle has 125 complaints and 3 recalls on file[6]. Every year from 1998 to 2005 has more complaints, from 180 to 361[6]. Every year from 2007 to 2019 has fewer, and the highest of those is 101 in 2013[6]. Several years have more recalls than 2006: 2001, 2004, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 each have 5 or 6[6]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so treat them as a rough guide within this model only.
Should you buy a used 2006 Beetle?
The record is mixed. The 125 complaints are fewer than in the years just before 2006, but the power train stands out with 46 of them[1][2]. In the samples we read, owners describe transmission, clutch and flywheel trouble, and air bag warning lights tied to a seat belt sensor. Before buying, Before buying, ask the seller whether the work for recalls 10V621 and 07V063 was done[3][4].[3][4]. Ask for service records on the transmission and the air bag system. Fuel economy depends on the version, from 22 to 34 MPG combined[18][7].
