2007 BMW 3 Series: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 1,023 owner complaints on file for the 2007 BMW 3 Series, the second most of any 3 Series model year[1][2]. Seven recalls apply, and at least one still has no finished repair, so check the VIN before you rely on any car[3].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 1,023 complaints with NHTSA for this model year[1]. Of these, 29 mention a crash, 59 a fire and 24 an injury[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
The largest component groups are these[1]:
- Electrical system: 281 complaints, including 38 fires[5]. Median mileage at failure is 80,427[5].
- Engine: 223 complaints, including 30 fires[6]. Median mileage is 80,000[6].
- Air bags: 221 complaints, including 13 crashes and 11 injuries[7]. Median mileage is 88,322[7].
- Steering: 114 complaints, with a median mileage of 75,200[8].
- Fuel system, gasoline: 112 complaints, with a median mileage of 19,832, much lower than the other groups[9].
- Latches, locks and linkages: 93 complaints[10].
We read a small sample of 12 complaint texts for each of the top four groups[5][6][7][8]. What owners describe in that sample:
- Electrical: In 9 of 12 texts, owners describe door locks or latches that stop working, often after a blown fuse, so people inside cannot open the doors[5].
- Engine: In 7 of 12 texts, owners describe a sudden loss of power, limp mode or stalling while driving, sometimes with no warning light[6]. Two texts mention a ticking noise[6].
- Air bags: In 8 of 12 texts, owners describe a passenger seat sensor fault or a warning light that stays on[7]. In 4 of 12, owners say the air bags did not deploy in a crash[7].
- Steering: In 10 of 12 texts, owners describe a steering lock warning, a locked steering wheel or a car that will not start, often followed by a steering column replacement[8].
This is a small sample, so it shows what kinds of problems owners report, not how often they happen.
Recalls
NHTSA lists seven recalls for this model year, newest first. Many of them cover other BMW models and years too, so confirm your exact car by VIN with BMW or NHTSA.
- Driver air bag inflator (24V513). Announced 2024-07-03 for 394,029 vehicles[11]. A steering wheel that was swapped for a sport or M-sport wheel may have an inflator that can explode when it deploys. Metal fragments could cause serious injury or death. Dealers inspect and replace the driver air bag module as needed, free of charge[11].
- Remedy pending
PCV valve heater (22V119). Announced 2022-03-02 for 917,106 vehicles[3]. The heater in the crankcase ventilation valve can short circuit and overheat, which raises the risk of a fire while driving or soon after parking. The fix is a wiring harness with fuse protection. The recall text says the remedy is still being developed, so it is not yet available[3]. It replaces and expands an earlier recall, 17V683, and cars repaired under that one must come back[3]. - Driver air bag inflator (20V017). Announced 2020-01-15 for 59,965 vehicles[12]. The inflator can explode and send metal fragments at the driver or other passengers. Dealers replace the driver air bag, free of charge[12].
- PCV valve heater (17V683). Announced 2017-10-30 for 740,561 vehicles[13]. The heater can short circuit and melt parts in the valve, with a fire risk even when the car is off. Dealers replace the heater, free of charge[13]. Recall 22V119 now supersedes this one[3].
- Heating and A/C wiring (17V676). Announced 2017-10-25 for 702,965 vehicles[14]. Wiring and connectors for the heating and air conditioning airflow system can overheat and melt, with a fire risk even when the car is unattended. The fix is to replace the wiring and connectors. The recall text says owners get a second notice when the remedy becomes available, so check with BMW whether it is ready for your car[14].
- Passenger occupant detection mat (13V564). Announced 2013-11-12 for 76,565 vehicles[15]. It covers 2007 328i, 328xi, 335i and 335xi sedans and 328i and 328xi sports wagons[15]. The mat that tells the car whether to fire the front passenger air bag can fail. In a crash the passenger air bag would then be turned off. Dealers repair the mat, free of charge. Some 2006 to 2007 3 Series owners also get an extended warranty on the mat[15].
- Battery cable connector (13V044). Announced 2013-02-07 for 516,791 vehicles[16]. It covers 2007 to 2011 3 Series sedans built from March 2007[16]. If electrical power is lost, the car may stall, which raises the risk of a crash. Dealers replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it in an improved way, free of charge[16].
Fuel economy
EPA lists many versions of the 2007 3 Series, and all use premium fuel[17][4]. Ratings are 17 to 18 mpg city, 25 to 28 mpg highway and 20 to 22 mpg combined[17][18][19]. EPA's estimated annual fuel cost runs from $3,750 to $4,100, based on EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not 2007 prices[4][18].
- Best combined rating: 22 mpg for the 328i and 328ci with the automatic (S6), rear-wheel drive[4][19]. Annual fuel cost is $3,750[4][19].
- Rear-wheel drive 328i with manual 6-spd: 18 city, 28 highway, 21 combined, $3,900 a year[20].
- All-wheel drive 328xi with manual 6-spd: 17 city, 26 highway, 20 combined, $4,100 a year[21].
- Turbo 335i with manual 6-spd, rear-wheel drive: 17 city, 26 highway, 20 combined, $4,100 a year[22].
So the spread between versions is small. The lowest combined number is 20 mpg[18].
Safety ratings
NHTSA lists its 5-Star Safety Ratings as not rated for all four variants listed for this model year[23][24][25][26]. That means there is no crash-test star rating to compare.
Engine and size
EPA lists the engines as 3.0L 6-cylinder, with a turbo version on the 335 models[17][27]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications, so US cars can differ slightly. They are for the 323i/328i 4-door sedan, rear-wheel drive[28].

NHTSA counts complaints and recalls for each 3 Series model year[2]. The 2007 year has 1,023 complaints and 7 recalls[2]. Only 2006 has more complaints, at 1,232, and it also has more recalls, at 12[2]. The nearby years are lower: 2008 has 676 complaints and 7 recalls, and 2009 has 365 complaints and 7 recalls[2].
Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so treat them as a rough guide only[2].
Should you buy a used 2007 3 Series?
The record shows a model year with a high number of owner complaints, led by electrical, engine and air bag reports[1][5][6][7]. Several recalls involve fire risk or air bag parts, and the PCV heater remedy was still being developed in the recall text[3]. Before you buy or keep one, run the VIN for open recalls and ask for proof of completed repairs. The car uses premium fuel and EPA rates it at 20 to 22 mpg combined[4][18].
Frequently asked questions
- What are the most common problems with the 2007 BMW 3 Series?
- By NHTSA complaint count, the biggest groups are electrical (281), engine (223) and air bags (221) out of 1,023 total[1][5][6][7]. In a small sample we read, owners describe door lock failures, sudden power loss and passenger seat sensor faults[5][6][7].
- Does the 2007 BMW 3 Series have any recalls?
