2022 Chevrolet Silverado: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Owners filed 650 complaints about the 2022 Silverado, led by engine and power train reports[1][2][3]. NHTSA lists 6 recalls for the year, so check the VIN before you buy[4].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 650 complaints with NHTSA about the 2022 Silverado[1]. Of those, 11 mention a crash, 6 a fire and 18 an injury, and none report a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one part of the truck.
Here is how the complaints split by component group:
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Engine[2] | 278 |
| Power train[3] | 187 |
| Electrical system[7] | 140 |
| Unknown or other[8] | 60 |
| Brakes[9] | 57 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[10] | 43 |
| Forward collision avoidance[11] | 28 |
| Steering[12] | 15 |
Counts are not adjusted for how many trucks were sold, so they show where owners report trouble, not how likely a problem is.
Engine. This is the largest group. Four of the six fire reports sit here, and the median mileage at failure is 42,500[2]. In the sample of engine complaints we read, owners describe the truck stalling, shutting off or losing power while driving (4 of 12 texts[2]). Others describe rough running, misfires, banging or ticking noises (4 of 12[2]), and a few say the engine would not shut off when it should (2 of 12[2]).
Power train. The median mileage at failure is 59,000, and this group has no crash, fire or injury reports[3]. In the sample we read, owners describe the transmission slipping or shifting hard or at odd moments (6 of 12 texts[3]). Others describe trouble with the shift selector or park, such as the truck not going into park or the selector sticking (4 of 12[3]).
Electrical system. In the sample we read, owners describe a trailer brake warning that shuts off the trailer's brakes (6 of 12 texts[7]).
Brakes. The median mileage at failure is only 6,000[9]. In the sample we read, owners describe the same trailer brake warning (8 of 12 texts[9]). Others describe a brake system failure message with a hard pedal or weaker braking (4 of 12[9]). Some owners in the sample say a dealer told them no fix was available at the time. That is the owner's account and not a recall[9].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 6 recalls for the 2022 model year[4]. Newest first:
- Transmission software redo (26V083). Dated February 12, 2026[13]. Some trucks may have been repaired incorrectly under recall 24V797. The transmission control valve may fail and lock the rear wheels. That raises the risk of a crash. Dealers inspect the truck and update the transmission control software for free. Potentially affected units: 1,055[13].
- Engine rods and crankshaft (25V274). Dated April 24, 2025[14]. It covers trucks with a 6.2L V8 gas engine[14]. The connecting rod or crankshaft parts may have manufacturing defects that can damage the engine and cause it to fail. That raises the risk of a crash. Dealers inspect the engine and repair or replace it if needed. If the engine passes, they add higher viscosity oil, a new oil filter and an oil fill cap, and update the owner's manual. Repairs are free. Potentially affected units: 597,571[14].
- Diesel transmission valve (24V797). Dated October 24, 2024[15]. It covers trucks with diesel engines. The transmission control valve may fail and lock the rear wheels, which can raise the risk of a crash. Dealers install new transmission control software for free. GM also provides a special coverage program for transmissions that the new software finds to have a defective valve. Potentially affected units: 463,295[15].
- Daytime running lights (22V903). Dated December 8, 2022[16]. The daytime running lights may not turn off when the headlights are on. The glare can reduce visibility for other drivers and raise the risk of a crash. A dealer or an over-the-air update fixes the body control module software for free. Potentially affected units: 740,108[16].
- Air bag module (22V873). Dated November 23, 2022[17]. The air bag control module was left in manufacturing mode on 5 trucks[17], so the air bags would not deploy in a crash. Dealers sent the trucks back to the plant and the modules were activated. The trucks had not been sold, so no owner letters were mailed[17].
- Sport bar brake light (22V463). Dated June 30, 2022[18]. It covers trucks with an accessory sport bar. The bar's high-mounted brake light may not work, and the bar may block the truck's own high-mounted brake light. Dealers check the installation and provide the correct wiring if needed, for free. Potentially affected units: 242[18].
Owners can look up their own truck by VIN on NHTSA.gov[13]. Recalls 25V274 and 24V797 cover only certain engines, so an owner needs to know which engine the truck has.
Fuel economy
Fuel economy depends a lot on the engine and drive type. The EPA lists these combined ratings, among others:
| Engine and drive | Combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3.0L diesel, 2WD[5] | 26 | $3,700 |
| 3.0L diesel, 4WD[19] | 24 | $4,000 |
| 2.7L turbo, 2WD[20] | 20 | $3,350 |
| 2.7L turbo, 4WD[21] | 18 | $3,700 |
| 5.3L V8, 2WD, 8-speed[22] | 18 | $3,700 |
| 5.3L V8, 4WD, 10-speed[23] | 16 | $4,200 |
| 6.2L V8, 4WD[24] | 17 | $4,850 |
| 6.2L V8, 4WD ZR2[25] | 15 | $5,500 |
| 6.2L V8, mud terrain tires, 4WD[26] | 14 | $5,850 |
The 6.2L rows list premium fuel[26]. The best rating in our data is 26 combined MPG and the lowest is 14[5][26]. The EPA fuel cost uses current fuel price assumptions, not prices when the truck was new. Some engines have several listed ratings, so check the exact setup of a truck you are looking at.
Safety ratings
NHTSA's 5-Star ratings for the PU/CC body style, in both 2WD and 4WD, are overall 5 stars, frontal 4 stars, side 5 stars and rollover 4 stars[6][27]. The rollover risk is 19.1% for 2WD and 19.8% for 4WD[6][27]. Two other body styles, PU/EC and PU/RC, are rated 5 stars for side and 4 stars for rollover, with the same rollover risk numbers[28][29][30][31].
Engine and size
The EPA lists four engines for the 2022 Silverado:
- 2.7L 4-cylinder: 310 hp[32]
- 3.0L 6-cylinder: 277 hp[33]
- 5.3L 8-cylinder: 355 hp[34]
- 6.2L 8-cylinder: 425 hp[35]
Sizes below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US trucks. They are converted from metric units.
| Version | Length | Width | Height | Wheelbase | Curb weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crew cab, M/box, 2WD[36] | 241 in | 81 in | 76 in | 157 in | 4,674 lb |

NHTSA lists 650 complaints and 6 recalls for 2022[4]. The 2021 model year has 847 complaints and 8 recalls, and 2023 has 388 complaints and 3 recalls[4]. Of the 28 model years in the data, 16 have more complaints than 2022 and 11 have fewer[4]. The 2022 year is in the middle of the pack for complaints. The most recalls for any year is 19, for 2014[4].
Should you buy a used 2022 Silverado?
The 2022 Silverado has a middle-of-the-range complaint count for its model line, and no deaths are reported in its complaints[1][4]. Engine and power train reports lead the list, so ask for service records and a test drive that includes a cold start and some shifting[2][3]. Check the VIN for open recalls, especially if the truck has the 6.2L V8 or a diesel engine, since those recalls cover only those engines[14][15]. Fuel costs range widely by engine, from $3,350 to $5,850 a year by EPA estimates[20][26]. The data here does not say which engine or version holds up best, so inspect the exact truck.
