2025 Ford Bronco Sport: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 39 owner complaints on file for the 2025 Ford Bronco Sport[1], and the model year has 7 recalls[2]. Several of the recalls touch safety systems, so check every one against the VIN of any car you plan to buy.
Most reported problems
Owners filed 39 complaints with NHTSA[1]. Five mention a crash, none mention a fire, and 5 injuries were reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several components.
The components with the most complaints:
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Engine[4] | 10 |
| Power train[5] | 7 |
| Air bags[6] | 5 |
| Forward collision avoidance[7] | 4 |
| Electrical system, steering, brakes, suspension[8][9][10][11] | 3 each |
Engine and power train. In a sample of engine complaint texts we read, owners describe hesitation, stalling or loss of power while driving or stopped. Some also describe a "shift system fault" warning[4]. In a sample of power train complaints, owners describe the same warning, along with a car that would not shift out of Park and then stalled[5]. Several of these texts look like repeat reports about one car, so the sample likely overstates how many cars are involved. In a few engine complaints, owners said the part for an engine recall repair was not yet available[4].
Air bags. In the air bag complaints we read, some owners describe an air bag that did not deploy in a crash. Others describe trouble connected to the passenger sensor recall, such as a warning light or a repair part that was not available[6]. Air bag complaints include 3 crashes and 3 injuries[6].
Forward collision avoidance. The four complaints we read are different from one another. They include a front sensor damaged by road debris, a system that did not act in a crash, unexpected braking and a shift into neutral while adaptive cruise control was on[7]. This group has 1 crash and 1 injury[7].
The brakes group also has 1 crash and 1 injury[10], and steering has 1 crash[9].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 7 recalls for this model year[2]. Newest first:
- Front lower ball joint (26V340). Ford says the front lower control arm ball joints may have been installed or repaired incorrectly at the plant. The control arm could come loose from the wheel, which can cause loss of control and raises the risk of a crash. Owners are told not to drive the vehicle until the repair is done. Dealers inspect and repair the ball joints as needed, free of charge. About 4,653 vehicles are affected[12]. This recall also covers other Bronco Sport years[12].
- Passenger occupant sensor (26V201). The sensor that detects whether an adult or child sits in the front passenger seat may fail. The air bag may then not deploy as intended, which raises the risk of injury in a crash. Dealers replace the sensor free of charge. About 3,170 vehicles are affected[13].
- EGR valve (26V122). The exhaust gas recirculation valve may fail and cause a sudden loss of drive power, which raises the risk of a crash. Dealers replace the valve free of charge. About 47,804 vehicles across several Ford models are affected[14].
- Instrument cluster software (25V788). The instrument panel may fail at startup, leaving warning lights and speed unseen, which raises the risk of a crash. The fix is a software update from a dealer or over the air, free of charge. About 229,609 vehicles are affected[15].
- Cylinder head ball plugs (25V372). A badly made cylinder head can let ball plugs fail and leak oil. That can cause loss of drive power, and near hot engine or exhaust parts it can raise the risk of a fire. Dealers replace the cylinder head assembly as needed, free of charge. About 404 vehicles are affected[16].
- Engine block heater (25V343). The block heater may overheat while the car is parked and plugged in, which raises the risk of a fire. This covers vehicles with a 1.5L or 2.0L engine and a block heater[17]. Dealers replace the heater element and check the cord, or owners can choose to have the element swapped for a plug and the cord removed. About 6,781 vehicles are affected[17].
- Instrument cluster replacement (25V049). The instrument panel may not light up at startup or while driving, which raises the risk of a crash. Dealers replace the cluster free of charge. About 298 vehicles are affected[18].
Ask the seller for the VIN and check it on NHTSA.gov[12][13].
Fuel economy
The EPA lists three ratings for this model year:
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 3-cylinder turbo, Bronco Sport 4WD[3] | 25 / 30 / 27 | $2,500 |
| 1.5L 3-cylinder turbo, Sasquatch 4WD[19] | 23 / 26 / 24 | $2,800 |
| 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo, 4WD[20] | 21 / 27 / 23 | $2,900 |
All three use regular fuel[3][20][19]. The EPA works out annual cost with its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new. Your own cost depends on local prices and how you drive.
Engine and size
The EPA test car list shows two engines. The 1.5L 3-cylinder is rated at 1 to 181 hp depending on version[21]. The 2.0L 4-cylinder is rated at 250 hp[22].
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications, so they can differ slightly from US models.
How 2025 compares with other years
Show the numbers
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 709 | 16 |
| 2022 | 369 | 15 |
| 2023 | 160 | 14 |
| 2024 | 112 | 8 |
| 2025 | 39 | 7 |
| 2026 | 8 | 6 |
NHTSA counts for each Bronco Sport model year:
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 709 | 16 |
| 2022 | 369 | 15 |
| 2023 | 160 | 14 |
| 2024 | 112 | 8 |
| 2025 | 39 | 7 |
| 2026 | 8 | 6 |
All figures are from[2]. The 2025 model year has the second fewest complaints and the second fewest recalls of the six years listed. Only 2026 is lower on both. These counts are not adjusted for how many vehicles were sold, so they are a rough guide only.
Should you buy a used 2025 Bronco Sport?
The complaint count is small next to earlier years[2], and no deaths were reported[1]. But this model year has 7 recalls[2], and some involve the front suspension, air bags, engine power and the instrument cluster[12][13][14][15]. Complaint texts we read also describe stalling and shift faults[4][5], though that is a small sample and some texts look like repeats from one owner. Before you buy, check the VIN for open recalls and ask for proof that each repair was done. Pay particular attention to the front lower ball joint recall, where owners are told not to drive until it is repaired[12].
