2016 Honda Accord: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 611 owner complaints on file for the 2016 Accord, and the electrical system is the most named area[1][2]. Four recalls are on file, so check which of them apply to any car you own or plan to buy and whether the repairs were done[3][4][5][6].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 611 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Of those, 32 mention a crash, 5 a fire and 29 injuries, and no deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified reports from owners. One complaint can name several parts, so the groups below add up to more than 611[1].
| Component group | Complaints | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical system[2] | 199 | 46,000 |
| Unknown or other[10] | 129 | 16,750 |
| Exterior lighting[11] | 128 | 40,000 |
| Engine[12] | 46 | 37,000 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[13] | 39 | 44,250 |
| Brakes[14] | 33 | 18,529 |
| Steering[15] | 31 | 21,879 |
| Power train[16] | 29 | 28,750 |
We also read a small sample of complaint texts for four of these groups. The sample is too small to say how common any theme is, but it shows what owners describe.
- Electrical. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 6 describe a car that is hard to start or has a dead or draining battery[2]. One says the car would not start after sitting for a while[2].
- Exterior lighting. In a sample of 12, 7 describe LED daytime running lights that went dark or were only half lit[11]. Some say this happened after the warranty ended[11].
- Fuel and propulsion. In a sample of 12, 8 describe stalling, hesitation or an accelerator that does not respond[13]. Some owners point to the fuel pump or mention a fuel pump recall[13].
- Engine. In a sample of 12, 4 describe stalling or a sudden loss of power, and 3 describe a vehicle fire[12]. The engine group lists 3 fires in its counts[12].
Median mileage at failure is the middle value of the mileages owners reported for that group.
Recalls
NHTSA lists four recalls for this model year, newest first. Some cover many Honda and Acura models, and the Accord is named in each one.
- Seat weight sensor (26V332). Filed May 21, 2026[3]. A sensor under the front passenger seat can crack and short out. That can make the air bags deploy by mistake during a crash, which raises the risk of injury. Dealers replace the sensor at no cost to the owner, and owner letters were mailed July 7, 2026[3]. NHTSA says VINs for this recall are searchable on NHTSA.gov[3].
- Fuel pump module (23V858). Filed December 18, 2023[4]. The fuel pump inside the tank may fail. That can stall the engine while driving and raise the risk of a crash. Dealers replace the fuel pump module at no cost to the owner, and owner letters were mailed September 6, 2024[4].
- Fuel pump particulates (19V060). Filed January 29, 2019 and covering 2015-2017 Accords with a 3.5L V6 engine[5]. Particles in the fuel can build up on the fuel pump and reduce its performance. That can stall the engine and raise the risk of a crash. At no cost to the owner, dealers update the engine control software and, if needed, swap the fuel pump[5].
- Battery sensor (17V418). Filed June 29, 2017[6]. Water may get into the case of the battery sensor and cause an electrical short, which raises the risk of a fire. Honda is to contact owners, and the dealer replaces the sensor at no cost[6]. As an interim step, dealers apply adhesive to the case to keep water out[6].
Fuel economy
EPA lists six versions of the 2016 Accord. All use regular gas and front-wheel drive. Ratings are in miles per gallon, shown as city / highway / combined.
| Engine and transmission | MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L 4-cyl, Automatic (variable gear ratios)[8] | 27 / 36 / 30 | $2,250 |
| 2.4L 4-cyl, Automatic (AV-S7)[17] | 26 / 34 / 29 | $2,300 |
| 2.4L 4-cyl, Manual 6-spd[18] | 23 / 33 / 27 | $2,500 |
| 3.5L 6-cyl, Automatic 6-spd[19] | 21 / 33 / 25 | $2,700 |
| 3.5L 6-cyl, Automatic (S6)[20] | 21 / 32 / 24 | $2,800 |
| 3.5L 6-cyl, Manual 6-spd[21] | 18 / 28 / 21 | $3,200 |
The annual cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 2-door (2 DR FWD) 5 stars overall[9]. It also gets 5 stars for frontal, side and rollover protection[9]. Its rollover risk is 9.9%[9].
The 4-door (4 DR FWD) also earns 5 stars overall[22]. It gets 4 stars for frontal protection and 5 stars for side and rollover[22]. Its rollover risk is also 9.9%[22].
Engine and size
EPA lists two engines for this year. The 2.4L 4-cylinder is rated 185 hp[23]. The 3.5L 6-cylinder is rated 278 hp[24].
The sizes below are Canadian-market specifications from Transport Canada, converted to inches and pounds. They can differ slightly from US models.

NHTSA has 611 complaints and 4 recalls on file for 2016[7]. Here is how nearby years line up[7]:
| Year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2013 | 1,437 | 6 |
| 2014 | 1,012 | 5 |
| 2015 | 641 | 6 |
| 2016 | 611 | 4 |
| 2017 | 584 | 3 |
| 2018 | 2,008 | 6 |
| 2019 | 792 | 6 |
| 2020 | 403 | 6 |
2016 has fewer complaints than 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019, and more than 2017 and 2020[7]. It has fewer recalls than every year in the table except 2017[7]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so treat this as a rough guide only.
Should you buy a used 2016 Accord?
The numbers do not point to one clear defect, and owners report trouble in several areas. In the complaints we read, starting and battery problems, failing LED daytime running lights and stalling come up in the samples for their groups[2][11][13]. Four recalls are on file for the passenger seat sensor, the battery sensor and the fuel pump, and 19V060 covers only 3.5L V6 cars[3][6][4][5]. Before you buy, ask the seller for proof that each recall repair was done. Safety ratings are 5 stars overall for both body styles[9][22].
