2006 Honda Element: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Air bags are the biggest problem area for the 2006 Honda Element, Air bags are the biggest problem area for the 2006 Honda Element, with 55 of its 122 NHTSA complaints[1][2]. The car also has several recalls on file, so check that every one has been done[3]., so check that every one has been done[3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 122 owner complaints for this model year[2]. Of those, 17 mention a crash, 1 a fire and 16 injuries, and none report a death[2]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several parts.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Air bags[1] | 55 |
| Visibility[5] | 12 |
| Structure[6] | 11 |
| Electrical system[7] | 11 |
| Suspension[8] | 10 |
| Seats[9] | 9 |
| Unknown or other[10] | 6 |
| Seat belts[11] | 5 |
Air bags. This group has 55 complaints, with 15 crashes and 16 injuries. The median mileage at failure is 76,500[1]. In a sample of 12 air bag complaints we read, 6 describe a side or driver air bag going off with no real crash, and 5 describe air bags that did not deploy in a crash[1]. The sample is small, so it shows what owners describe, not how often each thing happens.
Visibility. There are 12 complaints, with no crashes or injuries and a median of 23,000 miles[5]. In a sample of 12 we read, 9 describe a windshield that cracked or pitted with no clear impact, and 4 describe a failed power window regulator[5].
Structure. There are 11 complaints[6]. In a sample of 10 we read, 3 describe rust on the frame or on a rear trailing arm[6]. The group has a median of 109,500 miles at failure[6].
Electrical system. There are 11 complaints[7]. In a sample of 11 we read, 3 say the dash gauges are hard to read in sunlight and 3 describe headlight trouble, such as lights staying on or low beams going out[7].
The other groups are smaller. Suspension has 10 complaints, seats 9 and seat belts 5[8][9][11]. We did not read samples for those groups, so we say nothing more about them.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 9 recalls for this model year[3]. Seven involve air bags. One covers the automatic transmission and one is a paperwork fix. The recall notices cover model-year ranges that include the Element, and some are limited to certain states. Check your own VIN with NHTSA to see which apply and which are already done. Each of the air bag and transmission notices says Honda will do the repair free of charge, and none says the remedy is unavailable.
- Driver air bag inflator (19V499, June 2019). Some driver air bag inflators installed as a replacement part may explode as the propellant breaks down over time. Metal fragments could hit the driver or other occupants and cause serious injury or death. Dealers replace the inflator[12].
- Passenger air bag inflator (19V501, June 2019). Same kind of problem on the passenger side, in replacement inflators. Dealers replace the inflator[13].
- Driver air bag inflator (19V182, March 2019). Applies to cars that got a replacement driver inflator in an earlier Takata recall. A manufacturing error means the inflator may explode in a crash and throw metal fragments. Dealers swap it for an alternate inflator[14].
- Passenger air bag installation (18V268, April 2018). The passenger air bag may have been installed incorrectly during an earlier replacement. It could deploy improperly and raise the risk of injury. Dealers inspect it and replace the module if needed[15].
- Passenger air bag inflator (17V029, January 2017). Inflators may rupture after long exposure to humidity and temperature swings. Metal fragments could cause serious injury or death. This notice names certain states where the car was sold or registered. Dealers replace the inflator[16].
- Passenger air bag inflator (16V344, May 2016). Same rupture risk, for cars sold or registered in a list of states and territories. Dealers replace the inflator[17].
- Driver air bag inflator (15V320, May 2015). The inflator could rupture in a crash if moisture gets in, sending metal fragments toward the driver or others. Dealers replace it. Honda says this recall replaces several earlier ones[18].
- Transmission control module (11V395, August 2011). A bearing part in the automatic transmission can break. That can cause noise, a warning light, an engine stall, or the car rolling after you put it in Park. Dealers update the control module software[19].
- Owner's manual (06V270, July 2006). The manual printed the wrong phone number for the NHTSA safety hotline. Honda said it would send a postcard with the correct number[20].
Fuel economy
EPA lists four versions, all with a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and regular fuel[4][21]. Annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the prices when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA's 5-Star Safety Ratings list this model year as not rated[24]. That means there is no official crash star rating to compare.
Engine and size
The EPA listings show a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine for every version[4][23]. The dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications from Transport Canada, converted by us, and can differ slightly from US models.

NHTSA's counts for each Element model year show the 2006 sits in the middle of the pack[3].
- Complaints: 2006 has 122[3]. Only 2003 (423), 2004 (281) and 2005 (159) have more[3]. 2007 has 112 and 2008 has 113, and 2009, 2010 and 2011 have 31, 30 and 11[3].
- Recalls: 2006 has 9, the same as 2004[3]. 2005 has 7 and 2009 has 8[3]. 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2011 have 10 each, and 2008 has 12[3].
Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so compare them with care.
Should you buy a used 2006 Element?
The record points to one thing to check first: air bags. They account for 55 of 122 complaints[1] and 7 of the 9 recalls[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][3]. Before you buy, run the VIN through NHTSA and ask for proof that each air bag recall was done, since each notice says the repair is free[12][13][14]. Among the complaint samples we read, owners also describe windshield cracks and some frame rust, so a close look at the glass and the underside is reasonable[5][6]. NHTSA has not given this model year a star rating, so there is no official crash score to lean on[24].
