2013 Hyundai Genesis: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 200 owner complaints on file for the 2013 Hyundai Genesis, led by the engine and brakes groups[1][2][3]. All four recalls in our data are worded for the Genesis Coupe, so it pays to know which body style you are looking at[4][5][6][7].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 200 owner complaints for the 2013 Genesis[1]. Fifteen mention a crash, 7 mention a fire and 17 mention injuries[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component group. Counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold.
Here are the main named component groups in the data:
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injuries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine[2] | 68 | 0 | 4 | 0 |
| Brakes[3] | 61 | 6 | 3 | 2 |
| Electrical system[10] | 30 | 1 | 3 | 1 |
| Power train[11] | 28 | 0 | 2 | 0 |
| Air bags[12] | 15 | 9 | 0 | 9 |
Smaller groups are steering with 12 complaints[13] and speed control with 10[14]. Another 23 complaints name an unknown or other group[15].
We also read a small sample of complaint texts for the four biggest groups. It is a sample, so treat it as a hint and not as a measure of how often something happens.
- Engine. In the sample of 12 texts we read, owners describe hesitation when pressing the accelerator and stalling while driving or turning[2].
- Power train. In a sample of 12 complaints, 7 describe hesitation, delayed shifts or harsh shifts when accelerating[11]. Two describe grinding when shifting into the top gears of a manual[11]. Two describe a sudden loss of power while driving[11].
- Brakes. In a sample of 12 complaints, 5 describe a car that did not slow or stop as the driver expected[3]. Three describe hot or burning brakes, and two of those happened in snow[3].
- Electrical system. In a sample of 12 complaints, 4 describe warning lights, door locks, a door latch or key recognition acting up[10]. Three describe the car stalling or losing power without warning[10].
The air bag group is small at 15 complaints, but 9 of them mention a crash and 9 mention an injury[12]. That is worth knowing, though a count this small does not tell us how often an air bag problem happens.
Recalls
NHTSA has four recalls on file for this model year[8]. Each recall text names Genesis Coupe vehicles. Our data does not show a recall for the sedan. Check any car by VIN on NHTSA's recall site before you buy.
- Ignition lock switch (24V562). Filed 2024-07-25, potentially affecting 12,612 vehicles[4]. A return spring in the ignition lock switch can break. The car can then move unexpectedly if it is started in gear without the parking brake on, which raises the risk of a crash. The fix is a free ignition lock switch replacement at a dealer[4].
- ABS module (23V651). Filed 2023-09-22, potentially affecting 1,649,478 vehicles across several Hyundai models[5]. The ABS module can leak brake fluid inside and cause an electrical short. That can start an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. Until repair, owners are told to park outside and away from buildings. The fix is a free ABS fuse replacement at a dealer[5].
- Remedy pending
Passenger seat sensor (16V722). Filed 2016-10-07, potentially affecting 84,500 vehicles[6]. The wiring connector for the front passenger seat occupant sensor can come loose when the seat is moved. In a crash, the passenger air bag could then deploy only its first stage, whether or not a child seat is there. That raises the risk of injury. The remedy is to secure the connector. The record says parts were not available at the time and that owners would get a second letter when they were, so the remedy is not yet available according to that record[6]. - Rear differential bolts (15V756). Filed 2015-11-16, potentially affecting 10,800 manual-transmission vehicles[7]. If the differential and rear crossmember were not lined up during assembly, the bolts can loosen. The driveshaft could then disconnect, causing a loss of power and a higher risk of a crash. Dealers check that the differential is assembled correctly, free of charge[7].
Fuel economy
EPA ratings depend on engine and transmission. All of them are rear-wheel drive.
| Version | City / Highway / Combined MPG | Fuel | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genesis Coupe 2.0L turbo, Manual 6-spd[9] | 21 / 29 / 24 | Premium | $3,400 |
| Genesis Coupe 2.0L turbo, Automatic 8-spd[16] | 17 / 27 / 21 | Premium | $3,900 |
| Genesis Coupe 3.8L, Manual 6-spd[17] | 18 / 27 / 21 | Premium | $3,900 |
| Genesis Coupe 3.8L, Automatic 8-spd[18] | 16 / 25 / 19 | Premium | $4,350 |
| Genesis 3.8L, Automatic 8-spd[19] | 18 / 28 / 22 | Regular | $3,050 |
| Genesis R-Spec 5.0L, Automatic 8-spd[20] | 16 / 25 / 19 | Premium | $4,350 |
The cost figures are EPA estimates and use EPA's current fuel prices, not prices from when the car was new[16][9][18][17][19][20].
Safety ratings
Our data has NHTSA rollover results only. The 4 door rear-wheel drive version earns 5 stars, with a rollover risk of 9.5%[21]. The 2 door rear-wheel drive version also earns 5 stars, with a rollover risk of 8.2%[22].
Engine and size
EPA lists three engines for 2013 test cars:
- 2.0L 4-cylinder: 274 hp[23]
- 3.8L 6-cylinder: 333 to 348 hp, depending on version[24]
- 5.0L 8-cylinder: 429 hp[25]
Sizes below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models. Lengths, widths, heights and wheelbases are in inches, and weight is in pounds.
How 2013 compares with other years
Show the numbers
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2009 | 235 | 3 |
| 2010 | 156 | 5 |
| 2011 | 146 | 6 |
| 2012 | 271 | 5 |
| 2013 | 200 | 4 |
| 2014 | 44 | 3 |
| 2015 | 306 | 10 |
| 2016 | 104 | 6 |
NHTSA's counts for each Hyundai Genesis model year[8]:
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2009 | 235 | 3 |
| 2010 | 156 | 5 |
| 2011 | 146 | 6 |
| 2012 | 271 | 5 |
| 2013 | 200 | 4 |
| 2014 | 44 | 3 |
| 2015 | 306 | 10 |
| 2016 | 104 | 6 |
Among these eight years, 2013 has the fourth highest complaint count. Only 2015, 2012 and 2009 have more. It has four recalls, which is more than 2009 and 2014 (3 each) and fewer than the other five years[8]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so read this as a rough comparison within one model.
Should you buy a used 2013 Genesis?
The 2013 Genesis sits in the middle of its model years for complaints, with 200 on file and 4 recalls[8]. Engine and brake reports are the largest groups[2][3]. In the sample of complaint texts we read, owners describe hesitation, shifting trouble and stalling[2][11]. Before buying, run the VIN for open recalls, because the ABS fire risk and the ignition switch recall both name Genesis Coupe vehicles[4][5]. If the car is a coupe, ask about the passenger seat sensor recall, since parts were not available when the record was written[6]. If it is a manual coupe, ask about the differential recall[7]. Our data does not cover reliability ratings, prices or maintenance costs, so a pre-purchase inspection is still wise.
