2013 Chrysler 300: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 341 owner complaints on file for the 2013 Chrysler 300[1], and six recalls are listed for it[2]. Check that every recall repair was done before you buy or keep one.
Reported problems
NHTSA has 341 owner complaints on file for this model year[1]. 21 mention a crash, 22 a fire and 18 an injury[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several components. Counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold.
| Component group | Complaints | Fires | Crashes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical system[5] | 154 | 22 | 4 |
| Power train[6] | 61 | 1 | 4 |
| Engine[7] | 42 | 4 | 1 |
| Air bags[8] | 35 | 0 | 12 |
Electrical system. This group has the most complaints, with a median mileage at failure of 53,200[5]. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 5 describe a battery saver message or a dead battery[5]. 3 describe waiting for recall parts[5].
Power train. The median mileage at failure is 40,001[6]. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 5 describe gear selector trouble, such as a hard-to-move shifter or the car rolling while in Park[6]. Another 5 describe lost acceleration, jerking or harsh shifting[6].
Engine. The median mileage at failure is 45,000[7]. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 6 describe stalling or a sudden loss of power while driving[7]. 3 describe unusual noises[7].
Air bags. These complaints include 12 crashes and 12 injuries, with a median mileage at failure of 49,000[8]. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 6 say the air bags did not deploy in a crash and 4 mention the air bag warning light[8]. A complaint does not prove the cause.
The next groups are smaller. Exterior lighting, brakes and electronic stability control each have 17 complaints[9][10][11].
Recalls
NHTSA lists six recalls for this model year[2]. Newest first:
- Passenger air bag inflator (19V018). The inflator in the passenger front air bag may explode in a crash and throw metal fragments at people in the car. That could cause serious injury or death. The notice advises owners not to drive the car until the repair is done. Dealers replace the inflator free of charge[12].
- Passenger air bag inflator (18V021). Same kind of risk, tied to long exposure to humidity and temperature swings. The notice advises owners not to drive the car until the repair is done. Dealers replace the inflator free of charge[13].
- Alternator (17V435). The alternator may suddenly fail. The car may stall without warning, which raises crash risk, and the alternator may short circuit, which raises fire risk. Dealers check it and replace it if needed at no cost[14].
- Shifter warning (16V240). On cars with an eight-speed automatic and a monostable gear selector, the driver may not get a clear warning when the door opens and the car is not in Park. A driver could step out while the car is still in gear and be hit by it. Dealers update the software free of charge. The notice adds that some earlier repairs did not get the full update, so owners were told to come in again[15].
- Alternator (14V634). Another alternator recall, for cars with a 3.6L engine and a 160 amp alternator[16]. The alternator may fail suddenly and the car may stall without warning. Dealers replace the alternator free of charge[16].
- AWD transmission (13V610). This one covers 4,194 cars with a ZF 8HP45 AWD transmission[17]. The output shaft may break. That could mean a loss of power and a higher risk of a crash. The car may also roll away in Park if the parking brake is not applied. Dealers check the transmission and replace it if needed at no cost to the owner[17].
In the electrical sample we read, some owners say they were still waiting for recall parts[5]. Ask a dealer to confirm with the car's VIN that every recall has been completed.
Fuel economy
EPA ratings depend on the engine and drive wheels. Annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
| Engine and drive | City / highway / combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6L 6-cyl, RWD, regular[3] | 19 / 30 / 23 | $2,900 |
| 3.6L 6-cyl, AWD, regular[18] | 18 / 27 / 21 | $3,200 |
| 5.7L 8-cyl, RWD, midgrade[19] | 16 / 25 / 19 | $4,000 |
| 5.7L 8-cyl, AWD, midgrade[20] | 15 / 23 / 18 | $4,200 |
The 3.6L versions are also rated for gasoline or E85 with the same mpg[21][22].
Safety ratings
NHTSA rates the 4-door AWD and RWD versions the same[4][23]. Overall is 5 stars, frontal is 5 stars, side is 5 stars and rollover is 4 stars[4][23]. The rollover risk is 11.3%[4][23].
Engine and size
EPA lists three engines for this model year. The 3.6L 6-cylinder is rated 292 hp[24]. The 5.7L 8-cylinder is rated 359 hp[25]. The 6.4L 8-cylinder is rated 470 hp[26].
