2013 Chrysler 200: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 628 owner complaints for the 2013 Chrysler 200[1], and the model year has 5 recalls on file[2]. Air bags and engine problems lead the complaints, so check every recall on any car you are considering.
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 628 owner complaints for the 2013 Chrysler 200[1]. Of those, 23 mention a crash, 3 a fire and 35 injuries, with 0 deaths reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several parts.
The biggest groups are:
| Component group | Complaints | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Air bags[5] | 171 | 65,500 |
| Engine[6] | 150 | 70,000 |
| Electrical system[7] | 102 | 71,000 |
| Seat belts[8] | 86 | 60,000 |
| Seats[9] | 82 | 71,200 |
| Power train[10] | 62 | 33,000 |
Air bags. In a sample of 12 air bag complaints we read, 5 describe a warning light that stays on and 3 describe air bags that did not deploy in a crash[5]. The group has 9 crashes and 13 injuries in its complaints[5].
Engine. In a sample of 12 engine complaints we read, 8 describe the car stalling or shutting off, at stops, at low speed or on the highway[6]. The group includes 3 fires[6]. The car has a fuel tank recall that can cause stalling (see recalls below)[11].
Electrical system. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 6 describe lights or signals acting up, such as headlights, hazard lights, turn signals or dash lights[7].
Seat belts. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 10 are owners who got a recall notice and were waiting for a repair part[8]. That matches the restraint module recall below[12].
Seats. The seats group has 82 complaints and 18 injuries, the most injuries of any group[9]. Power train complaints number 62, with a lower median failure mileage of 33,000[10].
Recalls
NHTSA lists these 5 recalls for the 2013 Chrysler 200[2]. Newest first:
- Head restraints (17V640). Announced October 10, 2017, covering 363,930 vehicles in total[13]. A part in the occupant restraint controller may fail, so the active head restraints may not deploy in a rear-end crash[13]. That raises the risk of injury[13]. Dealers replace the controller as needed, free of charge, and the recall began December 4, 2017[13].
- Remedy pending
Restraint module (16V668). Announced September 15, 2016, covering 1,435,625 vehicles in total[12]. The module may short circuit, so the front air bags, seat belt pretensioners and side air bags may not deploy in a crash[12]. Dealers replace the module free of charge[12]. Owners were mailed letters on October 26, 2016 saying parts were not yet available, and the recall began August 15, 2017[12]. - Balance shaft bearings (13V552). Announced November 6, 2013, covering 521 vehicles with 2.4L engines[14]. Debris in the balance shaft bearings can cut engine oil pressure and lead to a stall or engine failure[14]. A stall while driving raises the risk of a crash[14]. Dealers replace the balance shaft module free of charge, and the recall began December 24, 2013[14].
- Head restraints and restraint module (13V282). Announced July 2, 2013, covering 442,320 vehicles in total[15]. A resistor in the occupant restraint control module can be overstressed, so active head restraints may not deploy in a rear impact[15]. Dealers update the power module software or replace the control module as needed, free of charge. The recall began November 19, 2013[15].
- Fuel tank valve (13V043). Announced February 6, 2013, covering 1,785 vehicles built from October 30, 2012 through November 2, 2012[11]. A broken control valve in the fuel tank assembly may cause a stall or a fuel leak[11]. A stall can contribute to a crash, and a leak near a spark can cause a fire[11]. Dealers inspect the tank assembly and replace affected valves free of charge, and the recall began April 4, 2013[11].
Recalls cover only certain vehicles. Our facts do not say whether a given car was fixed, so confirm the status for the exact car you are looking at.
Fuel economy
EPA ratings depend on engine and body style. Annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 200, 2.4L 4-cyl, Automatic 6-spd[3] | 20 / 30 / 23 | $2,900 |
| 200, 2.4L 4-cyl, Automatic 4-spd[16] | 21 / 28 / 23 | $2,900 |
| 200, 3.6L 6-cyl, Automatic 6-spd[17] | 19 / 28 / 22 | $3,050 |
| 200 Convertible, 3.6L 6-cyl, Automatic 6-spd[18] | 19 / 28 / 22 | $3,050 |
| 200 Convertible, 2.4L 4-cyl, Automatic 6-spd[19] | 18 / 27 / 21 | $3,200 |
The 3.6L is listed for Gasoline or E85[17]. The 2.4L versions use regular gasoline[3]. The 2.4L sedan rates 1 mpg better combined than the 3.6L sedan[3][17].
Safety ratings
In NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings, the 4-door front-wheel-drive version earns 4 stars overall, 4 stars frontal, 3 stars side and 4 stars rollover, with a rollover risk of 11.1%[4]. A second listing, C FWD, is not rated[20].
Engine and size
The EPA test car list rates the 2.4L 4-cylinder at 173 hp[21]. Our data has no horsepower rating for the 3.6L[17].
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications, converted to inches and pounds, and can differ slightly from US models[22].

NHTSA data for each Chrysler 200 model year[2]:
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2011 | 371 | 3 |
| 2012 | 638 | 4 |

| 2016 | 344 | 2 |
| 2017 | 43 | 1 |
The 2013 model year has the third most complaints, behind 2015 and 2012, and the second most recalls, behind 2015[2]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so treat the comparison as rough.
Should you buy a used 2013 Chrysler 200?
The 2013 model year has 628 complaints and 5 recalls, which puts it near the high end for this model, though 2012 and 2015 have more complaints[1][2]. Several recalls involve air bags, head restraints or stalling, so the repair history of the exact car matters[13][12][14][15][11]. The sedan earned 4 stars overall from NHTSA[4]. Ask the seller for proof that every recall on that car was completed, and have a mechanic look for stalling and warning lights. Our data cannot say how any single car has been maintained.
