2012 Chrysler 200: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 638 owner complaints on file for the 2012 Chrysler 200[1], and engine is the largest complaint group[2]. The car also has four recalls, three of them tied to air bags, head restraints or seat belt systems[3][4][5].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 638 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Of those, 29 mention a crash, 4 a fire and 33 injuries, and none report a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
- Engine: 161 complaints, the largest group[2]. Median mileage at failure was 64,234[2]. In a sample of 12 engine complaints we read, 11 describe stalling, hesitation or the car shutting off[2]. Four of those also describe steering or brakes being affected during the stall[2].
- Electrical system: 140 complaints, median mileage 70,500[9]. In our sample of 12, owners describe no-start trouble, battery drain or sudden shut-offs in 4 texts[9]. Two describe headlights that seem aimed too low[9].
- Air bags: 136 complaints with 20 crashes and 22 injuries[10], the most of any group listed. Median mileage was 66,448[10]. In a sample of 12, owners describe air bags not deploying in a crash in 6 texts and a warning light in 5[10]. Four mention recall parts not being available or a repair cost being quoted[10].
- Seat belts: 71 complaints, median mileage 55,000[11]. In a sample of 12, owners describe rear belts locking or not retracting in 2 texts and recall parts being unavailable in 2[11].
Other groups are smaller. They include visibility and wipers at 56 complaints[12], power train at 54[13] and steering at 45[14].
Recalls
NHTSA lists four recalls for this car. Newest first:
- Head restraint controller (17V640). A part in the occupant restraint controller may fail, so the active headrests may not deploy in a rear-end crash. That raises the risk of injury. Dealers replace the controller as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 4, 2017[3].
- Remedy pending
Seat belt pretensioner and restraint module (16V668). The restraint control module may short circuit. Front air bags, seat belt pretensioners and side air bags may then not deploy in a crash. Dealers replace the module free of charge. Interim letters in October 2016 told owners parts were not yet available, and the recall began August 15, 2017[4]. - Air bags (13V282). A resistor in the restraint control module may be overstressed, so the active head restraints may not deploy in a rear impact. Dealers flash the power module or replace the control module as needed, free of charge. It covers cars built from June 28, 2011, through December 13, 2012[5]. The recall began November 19, 2013[5].
- Engine and cooling (11V487). Some 3.6L engines built from August 31, 2011, through September 13, 2011[15], may have connecting rod bearing failure from debris in the engine block. That can seize the engine and raise crash risk. Chrysler would replace the engine free of charge. The recall covers 667 vehicles[15].
Check any car's VIN on NHTSA's recall site before you buy.
Fuel economy
EPA lists ratings for several engine and transmission setups[16][17][7][18][19]. Combined ratings run from 22 to 24 MPG[16][7].
- 2.4L 4-cylinder, 4-speed automatic: 21 city, 29 highway, 24 combined[7]. EPA estimates $2,800 a year in fuel[7].
- 2.4L 4-cylinder, 6-speed automatic: 20 city, 30 highway, 23 combined[18]. Estimated annual fuel cost is $2,900[18].
- 3.6L 6-cylinder, 6-speed automatic: 19 city, 28 highway, 22 combined[19]. Estimated annual fuel cost is $3,050[19].
- Convertible, 2.4L: 18 city, 29 highway, 22 combined[16]. Convertible, 3.6L: 19 city, 28 highway, 22 combined[17].
The annual cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices when the car was new.
Safety ratings
The four-door front-wheel-drive version earned 4 stars overall from NHTSA[8]. It got 4 stars in the frontal test, 3 stars in the side test and 4 stars in rollover[8]. Rollover risk is 11.1%[8]. A second listing, C FWD, is not rated[20].
Engine and size
The EPA test car list rates the 2.4L 4-cylinder at 173 hp[21]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US cars.

Should you buy a used 2012 Chrysler 200?
The 2012 model has the second-highest complaint count of the years listed[6]. In the engine complaints we read, owners describe stalling[2], and the air bag and head restraint recalls are worth checking[3][4][5]. If you are shopping, confirm with a VIN check that every recall repair has been done, and ask about stalling or air bag warning lights. Fuel economy ranges from 22 to 24 MPG combined depending on the setup[7][18][19].
