2017 Nissan Rogue: problems, recalls and fuel economy

Updated 2026-10-22. Based on NHTSA and EPA records. Published by Humblebee.

The 2017 Nissan Rogue has 600 owner complaints on file with NHTSA[1], and in a sample of complaints we read, owners describe automatic emergency braking that brakes hard with nothing ahead[2][3]. It also has six recalls, including a wiring fire risk that covers certain 2017 Rogues and a folding key that can shut the engine off[4][5][6]. If you are shopping for one, check the VIN to make sure every recall repair was done.

Most reported problems

NHTSA lists 600 complaints for the 2017 Rogue, and owners mention 57 crashes, 9 fires and 59 injuries, and no deaths[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one part, so the groups below overlap and do not add up to the total.

Component group Complaints Crashes Injuries Median miles at failure
Power train 123[7] 6 11 56,773
Brakes 114[3] 19 15 25,207
Forward collision avoidance 76[2] 6 2 14,500
Electrical system 74[8] 1 3 32,500
Air bags 72[9] 23 24 17,650
Engine 70[10] 3 0 21,000

Another 139 complaints are filed under unknown or other, so they cannot be tied to one system[11].

Emergency braking that acts on its own. In the forward collision avoidance group, owners describe the car braking hard with nothing in front of it, sometimes at highway speed[2]. Some say it followed warning beeps and a malfunction message, and some say bridges, traffic lights or parking garages set it off[2]. A few owners say the opposite happened and the system did not react to a real car ahead[2]. In that sample, several say the dealer found no fault or told them the system worked as designed[2]. These complaints tend to start early, with a median of 14,500 miles[2].

Brakes. In a sample of brake complaints we read, several describe the same unwanted automatic braking, just filed under a different heading[3]. Others say the pedal was pressed but the car did not slow as expected, or that the car moved forward while the pedal was held, such as when parking[3]. This group has 19 crashes and 15 injuries among 114 complaints, second only to air bags in the table above[3][9].

Power train. Owners describe the car losing drive: it stops accelerating, stalls or will not move in gear, then in some reports acts normal after a restart[7]. A few say the car moved or rolled when it should have stayed parked[7]. These reports come later than in the other groups listed, with a median of 56,773 miles[7].

Electrical system. Owners describe the engine stalling or losing power while driving, sometimes with gauges and accessories cutting out, and in some reports the dealer could not reproduce it[8]. Some owners also report long cranking or a key that will not turn[8]. This group includes 6 fire reports[8]. A separate wiring recall for a fire risk is covered below[5].

Air bags. This group shows 23 crashes and 24 injuries[9]. Crash and injury counts in owner reports do not prove an air bag defect on their own. There is a separate air bag sensor recall, covered below[12].

Speed control is a smaller group with 41 complaints, though it includes 6 crashes[13].

Recalls

The 2017 Rogue has six recalls on file[4]. Recalls cover certain vehicles, so run the VIN through NHTSA or a Nissan dealer to see if a car is affected and whether the free fix was done. Two of the recalls apply only to the Rogue Hybrid[14][15].

Fuel economy

The regular Rogue uses a 2.5L four-cylinder with an automatic transmission that has variable gear ratios[17][18]. The Hybrid and the Rogue Sport use a 2.0L four-cylinder[19][20]. All versions run on regular gas[17][18][19][21][20][22].

Version City Highway Combined EPA yearly fuel cost
Rogue FWD 26 33 29[17] $2,300
Rogue AWD 25 32 27[18] $2,500
Rogue Hybrid FWD 33 35 34[19] $1,950
Rogue Hybrid AWD 31 34 33[21] $2,050
Rogue Sport FWD 26 31 28[20] $2,400
Rogue Sport AWD 26 30 27[22] $2,500

The Hybrid saves about $350 a year over the regular FWD model by the EPA's estimate[17][19]. The EPA cost figures use today's fuel price assumptions, not prices from 2017.

Safety ratings

NHTSA gives the 2017 Rogue 4 stars overall with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive[23][24].

The Rogue Hybrid is rated only for frontal crash and rollover, with 4 stars in each[25][26]. It has no overall score on file[25][26].

How 2017 compares with other years

With 600 complaints, the 2017 Rogue sits close to the 2015 (553) and 2016 (542) model years[4]. The 2018 has more at 669, while the 2019 (339) and 2020 (152) have far fewer[4]. Across all Rogue years, only 2013, 2018 and 2023 have more complaints than 2017[4].

On recalls, the 2017 has 6[4]. That is fewer than 2014 (10), 2015 (9), 2016 (7) and 2021 (10), and more than 2018 and 2019, which have 4 each[4].

These counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so they compare Rogue years with each other only.

Should you buy a used 2017 Rogue?

The 2017 Rogue has decent EPA fuel economy[17] and a 4-star overall NHTSA rating[23]. In a sample of complaints we read, owners describe the emergency braking system braking hard for no reason, and some say dealers could not fix it[2]. Power train complaints also appear at higher mileage, which matters for a car this age[7]. Before you buy, confirm by VIN that all recall work is done, especially the wiring fire fix and the key spacer[5][6]. On a test drive, pay attention to how the emergency braking behaves on open roads and under bridges.
