2017 Nissan Titan: problems, recalls and fuel economy

Updated October 23, 2026. Based on NHTSA and EPA records. Published by Humblebee.

Owners have filed 187 complaints about the 2017 Nissan Titan with NHTSA, and the engine group shows up in 102 of them[1][2]. All three recalls for this truck come with a free fix, so a buyer should focus on how a specific truck drives and whether its recalls were done[3][4][5].

Most reported problems

NHTSA has 187 owner complaints on file for the 2017 Titan[1]. Of those, 5 mention a crash, 9 a fire and 5 an injury, and no deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified reports, and one complaint can name more than one part of the truck, so the groups below overlap[1].

Component group Complaints Fires Median miles at failure
Engine 102 4 22,000
Electrical system 31 4 28,000
Power train 26 2 16,250
Fuel/propulsion system 22 0 34,941
Unknown or other 13 0 8,000
Air bags 11 1 75,000
Speed control 10 0 21,500

Engine. This group is named far more often than any other, with 102 complaints against 31 for the electrical system[2][9]. In a sample of complaints we read, owners describe a delay of a few seconds, or no response at all, when they press the accelerator, sometimes while turning across traffic. Others report a sudden drop to reduced power, and some report exhaust, diesel or coolant smells in the cab that dealers could not fix or called normal[2].

Electrical system. These complaints include 4 fires[9]. Owners in our sample describe the truck going into a limp or reduced power mode, and wiring harness faults, one of them followed by a fire[9].

Power train. The power train group has 1 crash and 1 injury among its complaints[10]. Owners describe a transmission that hesitates, shifts late or erratically, clunks or grinds between gears, or stays in first gear when pulling away. A couple describe a drive shaft that came loose or failed with heavy vibration[10].

Fuel/propulsion system. Owners describe hesitation or shuddering while driving, and fuel lift pump or low fuel pressure trouble that left the truck stalled or unable to start, with repeat repairs[11].

Air bags. There are only 11 complaints here, but they include 3 crashes and 4 injuries[13]. Speed control (10 complaints) and steering (7 complaints) are small groups on this data[14][15].

Several of the complaints we read come from owners of a Titan XD with a diesel engine[2][11]. Our engine and fuel economy figures below cover only the 5.6L 8-cylinder gas engine[16][7].

Recalls

NHTSA lists three recalls for the 2017 Titan[6]. Each one has a free remedy, and none is waiting on a fix[3][4][5].

If you are buying, ask the seller for records showing the recall work was done[3][4][5].

Fuel economy

The EPA tested the 2017 Titan with the 5.6L 8-cylinder, an Automatic (S7) transmission and regular fuel[7].

Version City Highway Combined Annual fuel cost
Titan 2WD 15 21 18 $3,700
Titan 4WD 15 21 18 $3,700
Titan 4WD PRO4X 15 20 17 $3,950

Sources for the table:[7][17][18].

The PRO4X gives up 1 mpg on the highway and combined compared with the other versions, and its estimated annual fuel cost is higher[17][18]. The annual cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the truck was new.

Safety ratings

NHTSA gave the PU/CC body style 4 stars overall, 4 stars in the frontal test and 5 stars in the side test, in both RWD and AWD form[8][19].

Every rated Titan body style (PU/CC, PU/EC and PU/RC) earned 4 stars for rollover, with a 19.8% rollover risk[20][8][21][19][22][23]. The PU/EC and PU/RC styles were rated for rollover only[20][21][22][23].

The 2017 Titan XD was not rated by NHTSA in any body style[24][25][26][27][28][29].

Engine and size

The 5.6L 8-cylinder engine is rated at 381 hp on the EPA test car list[16].

The sizes below are Canadian-market specifications, converted from metric, and can differ slightly from US trucks[30].

Version Length Width Height Wheelbase Curb weight

With 187 complaints, 2017 has more than any Titan year from 2007 on[6]. Only 2004 (1,046), 2005 (891) and 2006 (430) have more, so 2017 ranks fourth of the 20 model years listed[6].

Later years have far fewer complaints. 2018 is next with 90, followed by 2021 with 58 and 2019 with 49[6]. The 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024 trucks each have 23 or fewer[6]. Our data has no figures for the 2016 model year[6].

The 2017 truck has 3 recalls, in the middle of the range of 1 to 5 recalls per year[6]. These counts are not adjusted for how many trucks were sold each year, so a year that sold more trucks can collect more complaints[6].

Should you buy a used 2017 Titan?

The 2017 Titan has the most NHTSA complaints of any Titan year after 2006, and the engine group leads by a wide margin[6][2]. In the complaints we read, owners describe delayed throttle response and rough or erratic shifting, so both are worth checking on a long test drive[2][10]. All three recalls have a free fix, so confirm they were done[3][4][5]. The gas Titan earns 4 stars overall in the PU/CC body style NHTSA fully tested and returns 17 to 18 mpg combined in EPA tests[8][7][18]. If you want a Titan with fewer reports, every year from 2018 to 2024 has fewer complaints on file[6].

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common problems with the 2017 Nissan Titan?
The engine group is named in 102 of 187 NHTSA complaints[1][2]. In a sample of complaints we read, owners describe delayed or missing throttle response, reduced power and cab odors[2]. Electrical (31) and power train (26) complaints follow, with owners describing limp mode and rough or erratic shifting[9][10].
How many recalls does the 2017 Nissan Titan have?
Three: an alternator harness that can short and cause a stall or fire (19V495), a missing load capacity label on trucks with accessories (18V240), and rear seat belt trim that can injure a passenger's head in a crash (17V268). Each has a free fix[3][4][5].
What gas mileage does the 2017 Nissan Titan get?
The EPA rates the 2WD and 4WD at 15 city, 21 highway and 18 combined mpg[7][17]. The 4WD PRO4X is rated 15 city, 20 highway and 17 combined[18].
Is the 2017 Nissan Titan reliable?
It has 187 NHTSA complaints, more than any Titan year from 2007 to 2024[1][6]. These are unverified reports not adjusted for sales, so have any truck inspected and test driven before you buy[1].
Which Nissan Titan year has the fewest complaints?
In our data, 2014 has the fewest with 10, followed by 2013 with 11 and 2015 with 12[6]. Among newer trucks, 2022 has 13 and 2024 has 15[6].
