2023 Nissan Rogue: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2023 Nissan Rogue has 744 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, the most of any Rogue model year listed, and 6 recalls[1][2]. Most of the complaints name the engine group, and two of the recalls cover engine bearing problems[3][4][5].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 744 owner complaints for the 2023 Rogue[1]. Of those, 24 mention a crash, 3 a fire and 16 an injury[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several components.
The largest groups are:
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Engine[3] | 413 |
| Unknown or other[8] | 151 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[9] | 99 |
| Power train[10] | 83 |
| Electrical system[11] | 58 |
| Forward collision avoidance[12] | 54 |
| Speed control[13] | 39 |
| Visibility/wiper[14] | 38 |
The engine group has a median mileage at failure of 56,965 miles[3]. Power train complaints have a median of 20,070 miles[10].
Fuel smell. In the sample of 12 fuel/propulsion complaints we read, all 12 describe a raw fuel smell in the cabin or around the car, often noticed in a garage[9]. Owners say dealers could not find a leak or a fix[9]. The same smell shows up in 10 of 12 engine complaints we read[3]. None of the six recalls we have on file is about a fuel smell[4][5][15][16][17][18].
Power loss. Owners describe a "power reduced" warning or limp mode, where the car barely accelerates. We saw this in 6 of 12 power train complaints[10], 2 of 12 engine complaints[3] and 4 of 12 electrical complaints[11].
Gear and park behavior. In 5 of the 12 power train complaints we read, owners describe shift lever warnings, shifting to neutral, rolling back or moving out of park[10].
Forward collision avoidance has fewer complaints than the engine group, but it has 10 crashes and 7 injuries among its 54 complaints[12]. That is the highest crash count of the groups listed above[3][8][9][10][11][12][13][14].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 6 recalls for the 2023 Rogue[2]. Newest first:
- Engine bearings, expanded (26V080). Filed 2026-02-11 and covers 323,917 vehicles[4]. It applies to 2023 to 2025 Rogues with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine[4]. Hot oil can break down, which may damage the engine bearings and cause engine failure. The risk is a loss of drive power and a possible crash, and a bearing failure may let hot oil escape and raise the risk of an engine fire. Dealers reprogram the engine software, check for trouble codes and test drive the car. They may also look for metal debris in the oil pan and replace the engine if needed. The repair is free. Letters were mailed April 8, 2026[4]. This recall expands 25V437[4].
- Engine bearings (25V437). Filed 2025-06-27 and covers 443,899 vehicles across several Nissan and Infiniti models[5]. Engine bearings may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure. The risks are a crash and, if a bearing fails, hot oil escaping and a possible fire. Dealers reprogram the engine software for free. Letters were mailed April 8, 2026[5].
- Seat belt pretensioners (24V156). Filed 2024-02-28 and covers 9,720 vehicles[15]. The front seat belt pretensioners may have been built wrong and may not hold occupants properly. That raises the risk of injury in a crash. Dealers replace the front seat belt assemblies as necessary, for free[15].
- Driver air bag inflator (24V154). Filed 2024-02-27 and covers 351 vehicles across several models[16]. The inflator may absorb moisture, which can make the air bag deploy improperly. Dealers replace the driver air bag assembly for free[16].
- Rear seat belt anchors (23V374). Filed 2023-05-25 and covers 71 vehicles[17]. A fastener at the rear seat belt anchor may not be tight enough and can loosen over time. A loose anchor may not hold an occupant in a crash. Dealers tighten the bolts and add warning labels, for free[17].
- Driver power seat (23V268). Filed 2023-04-13 and covers 12,400 vehicles across several models[18]. Welds in the driver seat frame may detach from a rear bracket, so the seat may not hold an occupant in a crash. Dealers check the seat rail and replace the seat cushion frame if needed, for free[18].
You can look up your own car by VIN on NHTSA.gov. Recall 26V080 VINs were searchable starting February 27, 2026[4].
Fuel economy
All 2023 Rogue ratings we have use a 1.5L 3-cylinder turbo with an automatic (AV-S8) and regular gas[6][19][20][21]. EPA ratings by version:
| Version | City / Highway / Combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| Rogue FWD[6] | 30 / 37 / 33 | $2,050 |
| Rogue FWD SL/Platinum[19] | 29 / 36 / 32 | $2,100 |
| Rogue AWD[20] | 28 / 35 / 31 | $2,150 |
| Rogue AWD SL/Platinum[21] | 28 / 34 / 31 | $2,150 |
The EPA lists a second set of entries with the same ratings[22][23][24][25]. Annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives both the AWD and FWD versions 5 stars overall, 4 stars for frontal crash, 5 stars for side crash and 4 stars for rollover[7][26]. The rollover risk is 17.9% for both[7][26].
Engine and size
The EPA test car list rates the 1.5L 3-cylinder engine at 201 hp[27]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.
| AWD | FWD | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 183 in | 183 in |
| Width | 72 in | 72 in |
| Height | 67 in | 67 in |
| Wheelbase | 106 in | 106 in |
| Curb weight | 3,545 lb | 3,386 lb |

Among the Rogue model years from 2008 to 2026 in NHTSA data, 2023 has the most complaints at 744[2]. The next highest are 2018 with 669, 2013 with 610 and 2017 with 600[2]. By contrast, 2024 has 216 and 2022 has 242[2].
For recalls, 2023 has 6[2]. That is fewer than 2014 and 2021, which have 10 each, and 2015, which has 9[2]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so a higher count does not by itself tell you how likely a problem is.
Should you buy a used 2023 Rogue?
The 2023 Rogue earns 5 stars overall from NHTSA and returns 31 to 33 combined MPG, depending on version[7][26][6][19][20][21]. It also has the most complaints of any Rogue model year in our data, and a fuel smell shows up often in the complaint samples we read[2][9]. Two engine recalls cover the VC-Turbo engine, so check the VIN on NHTSA.gov and confirm with a dealer that the work is done[4][5]. Ask for service records on any car you are considering. If you already own one, the free recall repairs are the first thing to book[4][5][15][16][17][18].
