2014 Toyota Sienna: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Owners filed 163 complaints with NHTSA about the 2014 Toyota Sienna[1]. In a sample of complaints we read, sliding doors come up often[2]. The van also has 6 recalls on file, so check each one by VIN before you buy[3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 163 owner complaints for the 2014 Sienna[1]. Six mention a crash, 2 a fire and 3 an injury[1]. None report a death[1]. These are unverified reports from owners, and one complaint can name more than one part.
The largest groups are below.
| Component group | Complaints | Median mileage at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Structure[2] | 44 | 63,500 |
| Unknown or other[6] | 27 | 51,200 |
| Electrical system[7] | 16 | 37,925 |
| Air bags[8] | 13 | 21,304 |
| Speed control[9] | 11 | 78,929 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[10] | 11 | 52,715 |
| Engine[11] | 11 | 46,000 |
| Brakes[12] | 10 | 56,250 |
We read a small sample of complaint texts for four of these groups. Here is what owners describe.
- Structure. In a sample of complaints we read, 10 of 12 are about the sliding doors[2]. Owners describe doors that will not open or close, open on their own, or keep triggering a door-open warning. Four of the 12 describe waiting for parts for the sliding door recall[2].
- Electrical system. In the sample, about half of the 12 texts describe power sliding doors misbehaving[7]. Three describe dash gauge lights that stay off unless the parking lights or headlights are on[7]. Two describe a string of dash warning lights with a speedometer or starting problem[7].
- Air bags. In the sample, some texts are about trouble getting the air bag inflator recall done, such as parts not being available yet[8]. Two describe an air bag that did not deploy in a crash[8]. Some describe a warning light or sensor problem[8].
- Fuel/propulsion system. In the sample, 5 of 11 texts describe hesitation, stalling or a sudden loss of power[10]. Two describe fuel filler door trouble, such as a door that opened without warning or a broken hinge[10].
The engine group is small at 11 complaints, but it includes 2 fires and 1 injury[11]. The air bags group has the lowest median mileage in the table, at 21,304 miles, and includes 2 crashes and 1 injury[8].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 6 recalls for the 2014 Sienna[3]. Newest first.
- Wheelchair van brake hoses (19V553). Vantage Mobility is recalling certain wheelchair vans built on a Sienna, 303 units[13]. The rear brake hoses may be too short and rub on the rear axle arm. A hose can fail, which can reduce braking and raise the risk of a crash[13]. Dealers install a set of rear brake hoses with the right clearance, free[13].
- Wheelchair van brake lines (19V410). Braun is recalling certain 2014-2019 Sienna mobility van conversions, 705 units[14]. Brake lines may have the wrong fittings, which can cause a pressure drop and a loss of rear braking power[14]. Dealers install an adaptor, free[14].
- Passenger air bag inflator (19V005). Toyota is recalling 1,299,448 vehicles across several models, including certain 2014 Siennas sold or registered in the listed states and territories[15]. The passenger front air bag inflator can explode after long exposure to humidity and heat, which can send metal fragments at people in the car. Dealers replace the inflator or the air bag assembly, free[15]. Some owners in our complaint sample describe waiting for parts[8].
- Power sliding door (16V858). Toyota is recalling 744,437 Siennas[16]. If the power sliding door cannot be opened when commanded, for example when it is frozen shut, it may later open unexpectedly, possibly while the van is moving. That raises the risk of injury. Dealers replace the junction block and the rear sliding door wire harnesses and add two sub wire harnesses, free[16]. Some owners in our complaint sample describe waiting for parts[2].
- Fuel delivery pipe (14V576). Toyota is recalling 15,872 vehicles across several models[17]. Fuel may leak from a fuel delivery pipe in the engine compartment, and a leak near a spark or flame raises the risk of fire. Dealers replace any suspect pipes, free[17].
- Shift control cable (14V414). Toyota is recalling 263 vans built June 17 through June 24, 2014[18]. A damaged cable sleeve can make the cable bind or come apart, so the gear you pick may not match the gear the van is in. The van may not be in Park when the shifter says it is, and it could roll away. Dealers inspect the cable and replace it as needed, free[18].
The two wheelchair van recalls apply only to converted vans. The cable recall covers only vans from the short build window. The inflator recall covers only certain regions. Check your VIN with NHTSA to see which recalls apply and whether the work is done.
Fuel economy
The EPA rates the 2WD Sienna with the 3.5L 6-cylinder and Automatic (S6) at 18 mpg city, 25 highway and 21 combined[4]. Its estimated annual fuel cost is $3,200[4]. The AWD version is rated 16 city, 23 highway and 19 combined, with an estimated annual fuel cost of $3,550[19]. Both use regular fuel. The EPA figures use its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the van was new.[4][19]
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 2014 Sienna 5 stars overall in both the AWD and FWD versions[5][20]. Both get 4 stars for frontal crashes, 5 stars for side crashes and 4 stars for rollover, with a rollover risk of 14.0%[5][20].
Engine and size
The EPA lists a 3.5L 6-cylinder rated at 266 hp[21]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US vans.

NHTSA has 163 complaints and 6 recalls on file for the 2014 Sienna[3]. That is far below the 2004 model year, with 2,062 complaints, and below 2011, with 615[3]. It is also below 2012 with 247, 2015 with 233, 2013 with 183 and 2010 with 172[3]. Some years have fewer, such as 2017 with 155 and 2016 with 76[3].
On recalls, 2014 has 6, the same as 2013 and 2015[3]. Model year 2011 has 14 and 2012 has 9[3]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many vans were sold, so treat the comparison as a rough guide.
Should you buy a used 2014 Sienna?
The 163 complaints are fewer than 2011 with 615 and 2012 with 247[1][3]. The sliding doors are the clearest theme in the sample of complaints we read, and a recall covers the door issue[2][16]. Before you buy, run the VIN for all 6 recalls, especially the passenger air bag inflator and sliding door recalls, since some owners describe waiting for parts[3][8][2]. Fuel economy is 21 mpg combined for the 2WD and 19 for the AWD, so budget for fuel[4][19]. This page cannot tell you about repair costs or whether a particular van has had its recall work done.
