2013 Ford Edge: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2013 Ford Edge has 2,447 owner complaints on file with NHTSA[1]. That is the most of any Edge model year, and both of its recalls have a free remedy available[2][3][4].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 2,447 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Of these, 33 mention a crash[1], 7 a fire[1] and 40 injuries[1]. One death is reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
| Component group | Complaints | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical system[7] | 854 | 45,000 |
| Brakes[8] | 633 | 86,000 |
| Unknown or other[9] | 427 | 49,200 |
| Structure[10] | 300 | 43,687 |
| Exterior lighting[11] | 191 | 46,025 |
| Engine[12] | 179 | 58,260 |
| Power train[13] | 160 | 66,144 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[14] | 93 | 70,000 |
Electrical system. Add[7] after 'door ajar warning' and after 'while driving'. Two describe phone pairing or touch screen trouble[7].
Brakes. Brakes have the most crashes (12) and injuries (15) of the groups listed[8]. In a sample of 12 brake complaints we read, 6 describe soft, weak or failing brakes, and some say it happened without warning[8]. In 5 of the 12, the owner says the dealer could not find or reproduce the cause[8].
Structure and lighting. In a sample of 12 structure complaints, 9 describe the same door ajar warning, which owners link to the door latch sensor[10]. In a sample of 12 exterior lighting complaints, 8 are also about door ajar warnings and interior lights staying on, and 2 describe headlights that seem too bright or too dim[11].
The same door ajar warning shows up in the samples for several component groups[7][10][11].
Recalls
NHTSA lists two recalls for the 2013 Edge[4]. Both have a remedy available.
- Halfshaft (14V393). Filed July 2, 2014. NHTSA lists 83,250 potentially affected vehicles across all models in the recall, not only the Edge[2]. A clip on the halfshaft may not have been installed properly. The halfshaft could slide out and disconnect while driving. Power would then stop reaching the wheels, which raises crash risk. A parked car could also roll away if the parking brake is not applied[2]. Dealers inspect the part and replace the linkshaft if needed, and the halfshaft too if it is damaged. The repair is free[2].
- Fuel line (14V002). Filed January 6, 2014, covering 27,933 vehicles with 2.0L engines[3]. The metal housing of a fuel line part may crack. That can cause fuel odor, seepage or a leak, and a leak near an ignition source may cause a fire. Dealers replace the fuel line with one that has no damper, free of charge[3]. This recall replaces an earlier one, 12V438, so a car repaired under the old recall still needs the new fix[3].

Fuel economy
EPA ratings depend on engine and drive. All use regular fuel. Annual cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices when the car was new.
| Version | City / Hwy / Combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| FWD, 2.0L 4-cyl turbo[5] | 21 / 29 / 24 | $2,800 |
| FWD, 3.5L 6-cyl[15] | 19 / 27 / 22 | $3,050 |
| FWD, 3.7L 6-cyl[16] | 19 / 26 / 21 | $3,200 |
| AWD, 3.5L 6-cyl[17] | 18 / 25 / 20 | $3,350 |
| AWD, 3.7L 6-cyl[18] | 17 / 23 / 19 | $3,550 |
EPA also lists a second AWD 3.5L entry with the same 18 / 25 / 20 numbers[19]. The 2.0L turbo FWD is the most economical at 24 combined MPG[5]. The AWD 3.7L is the thirstiest at 19[18].
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the AWD version 4 stars overall, with 3 stars frontal, 5 stars side and 4 stars rollover, and a rollover risk of 14.0%[6]. The FWD version gets the same star ratings, with a rollover risk of 15.9%[20].
Engine and size
EPA lists three engines for this model year[21][22][23].
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.

Across the 18 Edge model years from 2007 to 2024, 2013 has the most complaints at 2,447[4]. The next highest are 2011 with 1,803 and 2017 with 1,374[4]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so a popular year can have more complaints for that reason alone.
On recalls, 2013 has 2[4]. That is the lowest count among the years listed, tied with 2024[4]. Every other year has 3 to 8[4]. Nearby years had 3 recalls each for 2011, 2012 and 2014[4].
Should you buy a used 2013 Edge?
Merge or drop one sentence, for example start with: The 2013 model year has the most complaints of any Edge year[4]. The 2013 model year has the most complaints of any Edge year, led by electrical and brake reports[1][7][8][4]. In the samples we read, several owners describe a door ajar warning that can stop the doors from locking while driving[7][10]. Brake complaints deserve a test drive and an inspection, since owners describe soft or failing brakes[8]. Ask the seller to confirm both recalls were completed[2][3]. Pick the engine by your fuel budget, because EPA combined ratings run from 19 to 24 MPG[5][18].
