2014 Ford Edge: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 383 owner complaints on file for the 2014 Ford Edge, with brakes, electrical, power train and engine the biggest named groups[1][2][3][4][5]. The car has 3 recalls, two of them for axle shaft parts that can interrupt power to the wheels[6][7].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 383 complaints with NHTSA for the 2014 Edge[1]. Of those, 14 mention a crash and 11 mention an injury[1]. None mention a fire or a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
Here are the largest groups.
| Component group | Complaints | Median mileage at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown or other[11] | 82 | 49,000 |
| Brakes[2] | 66 | 60,500 |
| Electrical system[3] | 56 | 50,000 |
| Power train[4] | 56 | 57,514 |
| Engine[5] | 52 | 50,750 |
| Back over prevention[12] | 37 | 98,000 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[13] | 23 | 56,400 |
| Structure[14] | 17 | 58,500 |
We also read a small sample of complaint texts for four groups. It is only a sample, so it shows what owners describe and not how often a problem happens.
- Brakes. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 6 describe a weak or hard pedal or a loss of braking, often with the brake booster or master cylinder named[2]. 2 describe the brakes applying on their own, and 2 describe early pad wear or grinding[2]. The group has 2 crashes and 1 injury[2].
- Electrical system. In a sample of 12, 6 describe a door ajar warning that stays on with the doors closed[3]. Some of these also mention doors that will not lock, lights that stay on or a drained battery[3]. The group has 4 injuries and 1 crash[3].
- Power train. In a sample of 12, 7 describe a sudden loss of power or a stall, often with a warning light[4]. In some of these the dealer could not reproduce the problem. 4 describe a transmission that does not register Park[4]. The group has no reported crashes or injuries[4].
- Engine. In a sample of 12, 8 describe a stall or sudden power loss, and 3 of those mention a low oil pressure warning[5]. 4 describe an exhaust or fuel smell inside the cabin[5]. The group has no reported crashes or injuries[5].
The largest bucket is "unknown or other" with 82 complaints[11]. We cannot say what those describe.
Recalls
NHTSA lists three recalls for this car, newest first.
- Remedy pending
Front axle bracket (20V692). Issued November 10, 2020 for certain 2014 Edges with 2.0L or 2.3L engines and front wheel drive[6]. The bracket that holds the front axle halfshaft in place may break. That could cause a loss of the park function, so the car could move on its own, and a loss of power while driving, which raises the risk of a crash[6]. Ford's remedy is to replace the link shaft bracket free of charge. The notice says parts were not yet available when it was written, and the recall began February 2, 2021[6]. Our data does not show whether parts are available now. - Fuel pump (15V005). Issued January 9, 2015[15]. It covers 2014 Edges built from April 30, 2014 to May 21, 2014[15]. Improper nickel plating inside the fuel pump may cause it to fail. The car may then stall without warning, which raises the risk of a crash[15]. Dealers replace the fuel pump free of charge[15].
- Halfshaft circlip (14V393). Issued July 2, 2014[7]. It covers certain 2012 to 2014 Edges built from September 2, 2010 to November 30, 2013, and 83,250 vehicles in total across several Ford and Lincoln models[7]. A retention circlip may not have been installed properly. The halfshaft could then slip out of the linkshaft while driving, and power would no longer reach the wheels. If the parking brake is not set, the car may also roll away even with the transmission in Park[7]. Dealers inspect the car and, if needed, replace the linkshaft, and the halfshaft if it shows spline damage, free of charge[7].
Not every 2014 Edge is in every recall. The build dates and engine details above decide which cars are covered, so check a specific car by VIN with NHTSA or a Ford dealer.
Fuel economy
The EPA lists five ratings for the 2014 Edge. All use regular fuel.
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | Est. annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| FWD, 2.0L 4-cyl turbo[9] | 21 / 29 / 24 | $2,800 |
| FWD, 3.5L 6-cyl[16] | 19 / 27 / 22 | $3,050 |
| FWD, 3.7L 6-cyl[17] | 18 / 25 / 21 | $3,200 |
| AWD, 3.5L 6-cyl[18] | 18 / 25 / 20 | $3,350 |
| AWD, 3.7L 6-cyl[19] | 17 / 23 / 19 | $3,550 |
The best combined number is 24 MPG for the front wheel drive 2.0L turbo[9]. The lowest is 19 MPG for the all-wheel drive 3.7L[19]. EPA's fuel cost estimate uses its current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 2014 Edge the same ratings in all-wheel drive and front wheel drive form. Overall is 4 stars, frontal crash is 3 stars, side crash is 5 stars and rollover is 4 stars[10][20]. The rollover risk is 14.0% for the all-wheel drive version[10] and 15.9% for the front wheel drive version[20].
Engine and size
EPA lists two engines with a horsepower rating. The 2.0L 4-cylinder is rated at 237 hp[21]. The 3.5L 6-cylinder is rated at 305 hp[22]. The fuel economy data also lists a 3.7L 6-cylinder, but we have no horsepower number for it[17][19].
The size figures below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.

| 2022 | 133 | 5 |
| 2023 | 23 | 4 |
| 2024 | 44 | 2 |
The 2014 Edge has 383 complaints and 3 recalls on file[8]. Among the 18 Edge model years from 2007 to 2024, that is the seventh lowest complaint count[8]. Years with fewer complaints are 2009 (261), 2020 (325), 2021 (114), 2022 (133), 2023 (23) and 2024 (44)[8]. The nearby 2013 has 2,447 complaints, the most of any year, and 2015 has 731[8].
For recalls, 3 matches 2011, 2012 and 2019[8]. 2013 and 2024 have 2[8]. Every other year has 4 to 8, and 2017 has the most with 8[8].
These counts are not adjusted for sales, so they say little about how likely any one car is to have a problem.
Should you buy a used 2014 Ford Edge?
The complaint file for the 2014 Edge is smaller than for most other years of this model[8]. Still, owners describe brake pedal problems in a sample of complaints we read, and the brakes group has 2 crashes and 1 injury[2]. Others describe sudden power loss[4]. Check that every recall that applies to a specific car has been done, using its VIN. The axle recalls matter most, since the failure can cut power to the wheels[6][7]. The remedy for 20V692 may not be available, so ask about it before you buy[6]. Fuel cost depends a lot on the version, from $2,800 to $3,550 a year by EPA estimate[9][19].
