2014 Ford Focus: problems, recalls and fuel economy

Updated 2026-10-22. Based on NHTSA and EPA records. Published by Humblebee.

The 2014 Focus is one of the most complained-about Focus years, with 2,659 NHTSA complaints and 14 recalls[1][2]. The power train group, with the automatic transmission at the center of the reports we read, is named in 1,597 of the 2,659 complaints, followed by engine complaints about stalling and loss of power[1][3][4]. If you own or plan to buy one, check the VIN for open recalls, including the purge valve repair and the block heater recall, and do not plug in the block heater until it is fixed[5][6].

Most reported problems

NHTSA has 2,659 owner complaints on file for the 2014 Focus[1]. Of those, 69 mention a crash, 10 a fire, 47 an injury and 1 a death[1]. Keep in mind that these are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several parts of the car, so the group counts below overlap and do not add up to the total.

Component group Complaints Crashes Median miles at failure
Power train 1,597[3] 23[3] 40,000[3]
Engine 464[4] 18[4] 46,514[4]
Fuel/propulsion 310[7] 10[7] 60,000[7]
Unknown or other 279[8] 7[8] 50,000[8]
Electrical 274[9] 9[9] 52,077[9]
Steering 228[10] 12[10] 51,000[10]
Speed control 169[11] 12[11] 18,000[11]

The power train is the big one, and the reports we read point to the automatic transmission. The power train group is named in 1,597 complaints, more than three times the next group[3][4]. In the owner reports we read, the automatic shudders, jerks or slips, often when pulling away and in the low gears, and shifts feel rough or badly timed[3]. Several of these owners describe repeat dealer visits[3]. Some were told the behavior was normal[3]. Others got new clutches or software updates that helped only for a while[3]. A few say the car rolled back on a slope after they let off the brake, or lurched after a stop[3].

Stalling and sudden loss of power come next. Engine complaints describe stalling or rough idle at low speed and at stops, plus sudden loss of power while driving, sometimes with a Stop Safely Now message[4]. The engine group also holds the one reported death and 8 of the fire reports[4]. Fuel/propulsion complaints tell a similar story: power drops at speed or when pulling out, hesitation when accelerating, and a few cases of the car surging without throttle input[7]. Electrical complaints we read describe the car shutting down with a Stop Safely Now warning, and several of these owners seem to drive the Focus Electric[9].

Speed control problems show up early. That group has a median failure mileage of just 18,000 miles, the lowest of any group, and includes 12 crashes[11].

Structure complaints are few, at 63, though they include 7 crashes and 9 injuries[12]. A count that low does not point to a common problem.

Recalls

NHTSA lists 14 recalls for the 2014 Focus[2]. Some are repeat campaigns for repairs that were not done correctly the first time, so they are not 14 separate defects[5][13][14]. Many apply only to certain versions or build dates, so check your VIN.

Fuel economy

The regular 2.0L gas Focus is rated 27 city, 36 highway and 30 combined MPG with either automatic, listed by the EPA as Automatic (AM6) and Automatic (S6)[25][26]. The 5-speed manual is a touch lower at 26/35/29[27].

Version City / Hwy / Combined MPG EPA annual fuel cost
SFE automatic 28 / 39 / 32[28] $2,100[28]
2.0L automatic 27 / 36 / 30[25] $2,250[25]
2.0L 5-speed manual 26 / 35 / 29[27] $2,300[27]
Flex-fuel automatic 26 / 36 / 30[29] $2,250[29]
Turbo 6-speed manual 23 / 31 / 26[30] $2,600[30]

The flex-fuel versions can run on gasoline or E85 and rate 26/35/29 with the manual[31]. The Focus Electric is rated 105 MPGe combined with 76 miles of range[32]. EPA fuel cost figures use current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new[25].

Safety ratings

In NHTSA crash tests, the hatchback and the sedan earn the same scores[33][34].

How 2014 compares with other years

The 2014 is one of the most complained-about Focus years. Its 2,659 complaints are second only to the 2012, which has 3,803, among the 2012 to 2018 cars[2]. The 2013 has fewer, at 2,181[2]. The 2014 also ties the 2013 for the most recalls of any Focus year, at 14[2].

Later years look much better on complaints. The 2015 has 1,034, the 2016 has 1,194, the 2017 has 907 and the 2018 has 837[2]. These counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so use them to compare Focus years with each other, not with other models[2].

Should you buy a used 2014 Focus?

A used 2014 Focus gets good crash test scores[33] and is rated up to 30 combined MPG with the regular 2.0L automatic[25]. The weak spot is the power train, which draws by far the most complaints, and the owner reports we read point to the automatic transmission[3]. Engine complaints, which describe stalling and sudden loss of power, are the next largest group, and several recalls deal with stall risk[4][5][14][15]. If you are looking at one, drive it in stop-and-go traffic, ask for repair records on the transmission, and check the VIN for open recalls, especially the purge valve and block heater campaigns[5][6]. A 2015 to 2018 Focus carries far fewer complaints, if that fits your budget[2].
