2016 Ford Focus: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 1,194 owner complaints for the 2016 Ford Focus, and the power train is the group named most often[1][2]. The model year has 11 recalls on file[3], several about stalling or fire risk[4][5][6][7].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 1,194 owner complaints on file for the 2016 Ford Focus[1]. Of those, 27 mention a crash, 3 a fire and 24 injuries[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component group, so the groups below overlap.
Some of the groups named:
- Power train: 678 complaints, median mileage at failure 64,000[2].
- Engine: 285 complaints, median mileage 60,900[10].
- Fuel/propulsion system: 167 complaints, median mileage 56,223[11].
- Unknown or other: 107 complaints, median mileage 43,000[12].
- Electrical system: 86 complaints, median mileage 50,800[13].
- Fuel system, gasoline: 61 complaints, median mileage 80,000[14].
- Steering: 45 complaints[15].
Here is what owners describe. In a sample of 12 power train complaints we read, 8 describe the transmission shuddering, hesitating or responding slowly, and most of those say it happens when pulling away from a stop[2]. In 4 of those 12, the owner says the dealer called the behavior normal, could not reproduce it, or blamed driving style[2].
In a sample of 12 engine complaints, 6 describe stalling or a sudden loss of power while driving[10]. In a sample of 12 fuel/propulsion complaints, 8 describe stalling, and 4 of those tie it to refueling or a low tank[11]. Three of the 12 mention waiting on recall parts or a repair[11]. Those complaints line up with the purge valve recalls below.
In a sample of 12 electrical complaints, 2 describe rodent damage to wiring and 2 describe wipers stopping in the driver's line of sight[13]. That is a small sample, so treat these as things owners report, not as common faults.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 11 recalls for this model year[3]. Several apply only to certain engines, versions or build dates, so check which ones cover a given car. Newest first:
- Purge valve (26V369). The canister purge valve may fail, which can stall the engine while driving and raise crash risk. This repeats the earlier 18V735 recall for cars that were repaired incorrectly. Dealers update the engine computer software at no charge. It covers certain 2012 to 2018 Focus cars, 257,868 in all[4].
- Clutch, repeat repair (26V376). The clutch may fracture and damage the transmission, which can leak fluid and raise fire risk. It covers cars previously repaired under 18V169 and 18V845. Dealers update software and replace the clutch if needed, free. About 5,252 cars[16].
- Remedy pending
Block heater (26V012). The block heater may crack, leak coolant and short circuit when plugged in, raising fire risk. Owners are told not to plug it in until the car is fixed. Remedy not yet available: the recall lists the final remedy as anticipated in October 2026. About 2,403 cars[5]. - Remedy pending
Block heater, 2.0L engine (26V011). Same block heater defect and the same advice not to plug it in[17]. It covers certain 2013 to 2018 Focus cars with a 2.0L engine, 116,672 in all[17]. Remedy not yet available: owners get more letters once the final remedy is ready[17]. - Oil pump belt (23V905). The oil pump drive belt or tensioner may fail, causing a loss of oil pressure, an engine stall and weaker brake assist. That raises crash risk. Dealers replace the tensioner and belt free. If the engine fails before remedy parts arrive, Ford authorized dealers to replace the engine as an interim repair at no charge. About 139,730 cars[6].
- Clutch, 1.0L manual (18V845). The clutch may fracture, which can leak transmission fluid and raise fire risk[18]. It covers 2016 to 2018 Focus cars with the 1.0L engine and a 6-speed manual, 2,828 in all[18]. Dealers add software that prevents prolonged clutch slip and replace the clutch if needed, free[18].
- Purge valve, 2.0L (18V735). The purge valve may malfunction and stall the engine without warning, with no ability to restart[7]. It covers 2012 to 2018 Focus cars with a 2.0L engine, 1,282,596 in all[7]. Dealers reprogram the engine computer, check for fault codes and replace the valve as needed. Until serviced, owners are advised to keep the tank at least half full[7].
- Clutch, 2015 and 2016 (18V169). The same clutch defect for 2015 and 2016 Focus cars with the 1.0L engine and a 6-speed manual[19]. Dealers update software and replace the clutch as needed. About 5,361 cars across the models listed[19].
- Floor pan welds (17V052). Left apron joints may be poorly welded, which could reduce front-end strength in a crash. Dealers inspect and repair as needed. Only 17 vehicles[20].
- Hatchback latch (16V698). On certain hatchbacks with a manual transmission, one press of the interior release can unlatch the hatch. Dealers reprogram the body control module. About 64,038 vehicles[21].
- Focus Electric differential (16V479). The differential pinion shaft may overheat and fracture, which can cause a loss of power and park function and raises crash risk. Dealers replace the differential assembly. It covers 865 Focus Electric cars built from August 20, 2015 to April 13, 2016[22].
Fuel economy
EPA ratings depend on the engine and transmission. The annual cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
| Version | City / hwy / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0L 3-cyl turbo, Manual 6-spd[8] | 30 / 41 / 34 | $1,950 |
| 1.0L 3-cyl turbo, Automatic (S6)[23] | 28 / 39 / 32 | $2,100 |
| 2.0L 4-cyl, Automatic (AM6)[24] | 27 / 39 / 31 | $2,150 |
| 2.0L 4-cyl, Automatic (AM-S6)[25] | 26 / 37 / 30 | $2,250 |
| 2.0L 4-cyl, Manual 5-spd[26] | 26 / 36 / 29 | $2,300 |
| Focus ST, 2.0L turbo, Manual 6-spd[27] | 22 / 30 / 25 | $2,700 |
| Focus RS, 2.3L turbo, Manual 6-spd, Premium[28] | 19 / 25 / 22 | $3,750 |
The flex-fuel 2.0L versions rate 31, 30 and 29 combined MPG[29][30][31]. The Focus Electric is rated 105 MPGe combined with 76 miles of range[32].
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 5 HB FWD and 4 DR FWD versions 5 stars overall, 5 stars for frontal and side crashes and 4 stars for rollover[9][33]. The rollover risk is 11.6%[9][33]. The 5 HB AWD version is not rated[34].
Engine and size
EPA lists these horsepower ratings for 2016 Focus test cars: 144 hp for the electric motor[35], 123 hp for the 1.0L 3-cylinder[36], 160 to 247 hp for the 2.0L 4-cylinder depending on version[37] and 350 hp for the 2.3L 4-cylinder[38].
Dimensions are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US cars.

- Across every Focus year listed, 2016 has the sixth most complaints. The 2000 model year has 3,686 and 2001 has 1,761[3].
Should you buy a used 2016 Focus?
The record is mixed. The power train has the most complaints, and in a sample we read, owners describe a transmission that shudders or hesitates[2]. The model year also has 11 recalls[3], several about stalling or fire risk[4][5][6][7]. Safety ratings are good for the front-wheel-drive versions[9][33]. Any recall that covers a car should be completed, and two block heater recalls have no final remedy yet, so owners are told not to plug in the block heater[5][17].
