2014 Ford Fusion: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2014 Ford Fusion has 20 recalls on file with NHTSA[1], and steering is its largest complaint group, with 346 complaints[2]. Check recall status by VIN before you buy one.
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 1,432 owner complaints on file for the 2014 Fusion[3]. Of those, 56 mention a crash, 12 a fire and 47 injuries, and none report a death[3]. These are unverified owner reports, one complaint can name more than one part of the car, and the counts are not adjusted for sales.
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Injuries | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steering[2] | 346 | 11 | 7 | 72,857 |
| Power train[6] | 253 | 7 | 4 | 90,000 |
| Engine[7] | 242 | 1 | 0 | 79,063 |
| Electrical system[8] | 179 | 1 | 3 | 57,134 |
| Unknown or other[9] | 163 | 8 | 7 | 72,000 |
| Brakes[10] | 132 | 18 | 15 | 75,200 |
| Seat belts[11] | 84 | 6 | 9 | 55,749 |
| Structure[12] | 78 | 3 | 0 | 61,014 |
Brakes have fewer complaints than steering, but the table shows the highest crash and injury counts of any group listed[10]. We also read a small sample of complaint texts in the top groups. These notes describe that sample only, not all owners.
- Steering. In a sample of 12 steering complaints, nine describe a steering fault warning, a sudden loss of power assist, or a wheel that was hard or impossible to turn, sometimes at speed and sometimes ending in a tow[2]. Two others mention the steering recall notice, and one of them says the repair part was not available[2].
- Power train. In a sample of 12 power train complaints, five describe the car losing power or stalling while driving[6]. Three mention a "not in Park" warning and three describe harsh shifting, knocking or jerking[6]. Two mention a transmission fluid leak that was repaired[6].
- Electrical system. In a sample of 12 electrical complaints, five describe everyday features failing, such as windows, wipers, the key fob or collision warning[8]. Two describe losing all power while driving[8].
- Engine. In a sample of 12 engine complaints, six describe stalling or a loss of power while driving[7]. Some of the same texts show up under more than one group, so these themes overlap.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 20 recalls for the 2014 Fusion[1]. Some of them cover several models, or only certain build dates, engines, transmissions or states, so use a car's VIN to see which ones apply to it. Newest first:
- Clutch (26V376). Ford says certain 2013-2016 Fusions that were earlier repaired incorrectly under recalls 18V169 and 18V845 may have a clutch that fractures, which can damage the transmission and leak fluid[13]. The leak can raise the risk of a fire, and the recall covers 5,252 vehicles[13]. The notice describes a free software update from dealers[13].
- Front brake hoses (23V162). The front brake hoses may rupture and leak brake fluid, which lengthens the distance needed to stop and raises crash risk[14]. The recall covers 1,280,726 vehicles, and dealers replace the front hoses free of charge[14].
- Shifter cable bushing (22V413). A bushing on the shifter cable may degrade or detach, so the car may not shift into the intended gear, may move unexpectedly, or may roll after the driver selects Park[15]. The recall covers 2,925,968 vehicles across several Ford models, and dealers replace the bushing and add a protective cap[15].
- Brake pedal bumper (22V011). In a list of states that includes Texas, Florida and Hawaii, heat, humidity and salt air can corrode the brake pedal bumper until it separates[16]. Brake lights can stay on, and on automatic cars the driver may be able to shift out of Park without pressing the brake, so the car could roll[16]. The recall covers 199,085 vehicles, and dealers replace the bumpers[16].
- Door latch, repair redo (20V331). Doors repaired under earlier latch recalls may not have been fixed properly, so a door can seem closed when it is not and could open while driving[17]. The recall covers 2,147,323 vehicles, and dealers check the latch date codes and replace the side door latches if needed[17].
- Door latch, listed states (20V177). A part inside the door latch may break, so a door may be hard to latch or look closed when it is not[18]. The recall covers 288,110 vehicles in a list of states and territories, and dealers replace the side door latches[18].
- Power steering motor bolts (19V632). In a list of states, road salt may corrode the bolts holding the power steering motor[19]. The motor can detach, which takes away power assist, takes more effort to steer at low speeds and raises crash risk[19]. The recall covers 116,160 vehicles, and dealers replace the bolts and apply a wax sealer[19].
- Shifter cable bushing, 2.5L engine (19V362). The bushing can detach, so the driver may be able to move the lever to Park and remove the key while the transmission is not in Park, with no warning[20]. The car could then move on its own[20]. The recall covers 259,182 vehicles, and Ford told owners to use the parking brake until the repair[20].
- Charge cord (18V592). Certain 120V convenience charge cords sold for Fusion Energi and other plug-in Fords were made without thermistors and can overheat and melt, which raises fire risk[21]. The recall covers 49,197 cords, and Ford replaces them[21].
- Shifter cable bushing, six-speed automatic (18V471). This is the same bushing problem for Fusions with six-speed automatic transmissions[22]. The recall covers 504,182 vehicles, and Ford told owners to use the parking brake until the repair[22].
- Clutch (18V169). On 2013-2014 Fusions with the 1.6L GTDI engine and 6-speed manual, the clutch may fracture and leak transmission fluid, which raises fire risk[23]. The recall covers 5,361 vehicles, and Fusion owners get a clutch assembly replacement[23].
- Steering wheel bolt (18V167). The bolt holding the steering wheel may loosen and let the wheel detach while driving, causing a loss of steering control[24]. The recall covers 1,301,986 vehicles, and dealers fit a longer bolt[24].
- Cylinder head (17V209). On Fusions with the 1.6L GTDI engine, driving with too little coolant may overheat the cylinder head, crack it and leak oil onto hot parts, which raises fire risk[25]. The recall covers 208,584 vehicles, and dealers install a coolant level sensor[25].
- Door latch (17V210). A part inside the door latch may break, so a door may not be securely latched and could open while driving[26]. The recall covers 191,432 vehicles, and dealers replace all four door latches[26].
- Front seat belt cable (16V875). In a crash, heat from the seat belt pretensioner may make a front seat belt anchor cable fail, which raises injury risk[27]. The recall covers 603,392 vehicles, and dealers apply a protective coating to the cable[27].
- Power steering motor bolts (15V250). This is the earlier version of the corroded bolt problem, in a list of states, with the same loss of power assist[28]. The recall covers 487,301 vehicles, and dealers apply sealer and replace the bolts, or the whole steering gear if bolts are broken or missing[28].
- Door latch (15V246). The same latch part may break, so a door may not be securely latched[29]. The recall covers 456,440 vehicles and was later expanded, and dealers replace all four latches with an improved part[29].
- Key removable out of Park (14V736). On certain 2014-2015 Fusions, the key may come out while the transmission is not in Park, so a driver may think the car is safely parked when it is not[30]. The recall covers 56,479 vehicles, and dealers repair them[30].
- Remedy pending
Restraint control module (14V597). A coating on the module may crack and short in humid conditions, so the front air bags, curtain air bags and seat belt pretensioners may not work when needed[31]. The recall covers 746,842 vehicles, and the fix is a new module, but the notice says parts were not available, so the remedy was not yet available when it was written[31]. - Seatback recliner (14V164). Poor welds on the recliner mechanism may leave the seatbacks too weak, so they may loosen or lean while driving[32]. The recall covers 43,135 vehicles, and dealers replace the seatback[32].
Fuel economy
EPA lists several versions of the 2014 Fusion. The 1.5L automatic appears twice with different ratings, so check which version a car is[33][34].
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L turbo, automatic (S6), front-wheel drive[33] | 23 / 35 / 27 | $2,500 |
| 1.5L turbo, automatic (S6), front-wheel drive, second listing[34] | 25 / 36 / 29 | $2,300 |
| 1.6L turbo, 6-speed manual[35] | 25 / 36 / 29 | $2,300 |
| 2.0L turbo, automatic (S6), all-wheel drive[36] | 22 / 31 / 25 | $2,700 |
| 2.0L turbo, automatic (S6), front-wheel drive[37] | 22 / 32 / 26 | $2,600 |
| 2.5L, automatic (S6), front-wheel drive[38] | 22 / 33 / 26 | $2,600 |
| Hybrid, 2.0L, front-wheel drive[4] | 43 / 39 / 41 | $1,650 |
The Energi plug-in hybrid is rated 38 MPGe combined with 550 miles of range[39]. EPA's annual fuel cost uses its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 4-door Fusion 5 stars overall and 5 stars in the frontal test in all three listings, one of which is filed under Fusion Energi[5][40][41]. Side is 4 stars for the all-wheel-drive version and one front-wheel-drive listing, and 5 stars for the other front-wheel-drive listing[5][40][41]. Rollover is 4 stars with a 10.9% rollover risk[5].
Engine and size
EPA lists these horsepower ratings by engine for the 2014 Fusion[42][43][44][45]:
| Engine | Horsepower |
|---|---|
| 1.5L 4-cylinder[42] | 169 hp |
| 1.6L 4-cylinder[43] | 170 hp |
| 2.0L 4-cylinder[44] | 141 to 237 hp, depending on version |
| 2.5L 4-cylinder[45] | 175 hp |
Size is the same for all three variants listed: 192 inches long, 73 wide, 57 tall, on a 112-inch wheelbase[46][47][48]. Curb weight is 3,426 lb for the S and SE sedan[48], 3,640 lb for the Hybrid[47] and 3,913 lb for the Energi[46]. These dimensions are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.

Five years have more complaints than 2014: 2010 (5,639), 2011 (2,926), 2012 (2,617), 2013 (1,957) and 2016 (1,724)[1]. The other nine have fewer, including 2015 with 1,066 complaints and 14 recalls[1]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so treat them as a rough comparison.
Should you buy a used 2014 Fusion?
The 2014 Fusion carries a long recall list that touches shifting, steering, brakes, door latches and air bags, so confirm by VIN that every recall that applies to the car has been done[1]. Steering is the largest complaint group at 346 complaints, and owners in the sample we read describe fault warnings and lost power assist[2]. On the plus side, NHTSA rates it 5 stars overall[5], and the Hybrid is rated 41 combined MPG[4]. If a seller cannot show completed recalls, or the car has steering or shifter symptoms, weigh that in the price. Our data cannot say how long any given repair lasts.
