2017 Chrysler Pacifica: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2017 Pacifica has more complaints and more recalls than any other Pacifica year in our data, so check every open recall before you buy[1]. NHTSA lists 1,616 owner complaints and 17 recalls, and several recalls cover plug-in hybrid fire risk[2][3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 1,616 owner complaints on file for this model year[4]. They include 47 that mention a crash, 15 a fire and 41 injuries, and no deaths were reported[4]. These are unverified reports from owners, and one complaint can name several parts.
The biggest groups are:
- Engine: 554 complaints, with a median mileage at failure of 19,750[7].
- Power train: 487 complaints, median 25,432 miles[8].
- Electrical system: 425 complaints, median 25,000 miles[9].
- Steering: 292 complaints, median 37,000 miles[10].
In a sample of engine complaints we read, owners describe the van stalling or shutting off while driving, often with a dash message telling them to shift into park before restarting[7]. In the power train sample, owners describe losing drive power, being unable to accelerate or having the transmission lock up[8]. A few power train complaints in that sample describe trouble with the gear selector, park position or electronic parking brake[8]. In the electrical sample, owners also describe the van dying or losing drive power while driving[9]. In the steering sample, some owners describe losing power steering assist during a shutdown[10].
Two smaller groups stand out for crashes. Speed control has 89 complaints and 15 crashes[11]. Brakes have 91 complaints and 13 crashes[12]. The fuel and propulsion group has 88 complaints, including 4 fires[13]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so they show what owners reported, not how likely a problem is.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 17 recalls for this model year[1]. Several apply only to plug-in hybrid versions or to wheelchair-accessible conversions, so confirm with a dealer which recalls apply to your own van. Newest first:
- Wheelchair restraints (25V876). Retractors on certain wheelchair restraint systems fitted to many van models, including the Pacifica, may not lock. An unsecured wheelchair can move in transit and raise injury risk. The company recalling them, Rollx, will inspect and replace retractors as needed at no charge. The recall lists many van models and refers to its own report for model years[14].
- Plug-in hybrid battery fire, second recall (24V536). The battery pack in 2017 and 2018 plug-in hybrids that got the earlier software fix may still catch fire while parked, even switched off. Owners are told not to charge the van and to park outside away from buildings until it is repaired. Dealers will update battery software and inspect or replace the battery pack for free. This also covers vans already repaired under 22V077[2].
- Hybrid wiring connector (23V010). An internal transmission wiring connector in 2017 to 2023 plug-in hybrids may short circuit and shut the engine off unexpectedly. That can mean a loss of drive power and a higher crash risk. Dealers will update software at no charge[15].
- Plug-in hybrid battery fire (22V077). Some 2017 and 2018 plug-in hybrids can catch fire while parked, even switched off. Owners were told not to recharge them and to park outside until repaired. The fix was a battery software update plus inspection or replacement of the battery pack. A later recall replaced this one[3].
- 12 volt post overheating (20V334). In some plug-in hybrids, a 12 volt post behind the driver's seat can develop high resistance and overheat, which raises fire risk[16]. When the recall was filed, the final repair was still under development. Dealers did an interim inspection, with a loaner vehicle if the joint was compromised[16].
- Battery ground and power steering (19V348). On 2017 to 2019 Pacificas with engine stop/start, a loose battery ground connection can make power steering help cut in and out, or stall the van. For 18V049: the engine software can lose its timing match with the crankshaft sensor and stall the engine. Dealers inspect and clean the ground connection for free[17].
- Hybrid engine restart (18V740). After running in electric mode, the gas engine in some plug-in hybrids may not restart properly. The result can be lost drive power or a fire risk from unburned fuel in the catalytic converter. Dealers update software and replace the converter if needed, free of charge[18].
- Powertrain control module (18V524). A voltage regulator chip in the powertrain control module may fail on some 2018 Pacificas, causing a stall or a no-start. Dealers replace the module for free[19].
- Manual park release (18V395). On 2017 and 2018 Pacificas the manual park release plug can be removed without a tool. If it is engaged by accident, the van could roll away. Dealers replace the plug for free[20].
- Cruise control (18V332). A short circuit in the wiring could stop cruise control from switching off, even when the driver brakes. Dealers update the engine or powertrain control software at no charge. Until then, owners were advised to stop using cruise control[21].
- Engine stall software (18V049). On 2017 Pacificas with the 3.6L engine, the engine control software can get out of sync with the crankshaft position sensor and stall the engine[22]. Dealers update the software for free[22].
- Second-row seat belt (17V542). In vans with the 8-passenger seating option, the center seat belt buckle in the second row could unlatch the left outer seat belt[23]. Dealers install a shorter buckle for free[23].
- Lowered-floor conversion bracket (17V482). Certain lowered-floor vans modified by Vantage Mobility International can have cracked rear pinion brackets, which can cause wheel wobble and loss of control. Dealers replace the brackets at no charge[24].
- Tire placard (17V375). A small number of plug-in hybrids had a tire label listing the wrong seating capacity, which could lead to overloading. Dealers replace the label for free[25].
- Hybrid inverter diodes (17V371). Diodes in the power inverter module of some plug-in hybrids can fail, and then the van will not move under its own power. Dealers reprogram several control modules and replace the inverter if needed, free of charge[26].
- Crossed brake lines (17V342). Some wheelchair-accessible conversions by Vantage Mobility had rear brake lines crossed, which makes the rear anti-lock brakes ineffective. Dealers correct the lines for free[27].
- Seat belt stow clip (16V490). On vans built in a short window in early 2016, a clip may break and keep the third-row or second-row center seat belt from being used. Dealers replace the part for free[28].
Two cautions. The hybrid battery recalls (22V077 and 24V536) tell owners not to charge and to park outside until repaired[2][3]. For 20V334, the final repair was still under development when the recall was filed, so ask a dealer what the current repair is[16].
Fuel economy
The EPA rates the gas 3.6L 6-cylinder with a 9-speed automatic at 18 city, 28 highway and 22 combined MPG[5]. Another listing shows 19 city, 28 highway and 22 combined[29]. Both carry an estimated annual fuel cost of $3,050, based on EPA's current fuel price assumptions rather than prices when the van was new[5][29].
The Pacifica Hybrid is rated at 32 MPGe combined, with 570 miles of range[30].
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the front-wheel-drive van 5 stars overall, 5 stars for frontal crashes and 5 stars for side crashes[6]. Rollover is rated 4 stars, with a rollover risk of 11.6%[6].
Engine and size
The EPA lists the 3.6L 6-cylinder at 287 hp[31]. The size figures below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US vans[32].

Should you buy a used 2017 Pacifica?
This model year has the heaviest record in our data, with 1,616 complaints and 17 recalls[1]. The largest complaint groups are engine, power train, electrical and steering, and the sampled texts describe sudden shutdowns[7][8][9][10]. On the plus side, the safety ratings are strong at 5 stars overall[6]. If you are looking at a plug-in hybrid, confirm that the battery fire recalls are completed, because owners were told not to charge until repaired[2][3]. Whatever version you pick, run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for proof that the recall work was done.
